DESIGN AND STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

OF WHEEL RIM
ABSTRACT
The essential of car wheel rim is to provide a firm base on which to fit
the tyre. Its dimensions, shape should be suitable to adequately
accommodate the particular tyre required for the vehicle.
In this project a tyre of car wheel rim belonging to the disc wheel
category is considered. Design is an important industrial activity which
influences the quality of the product.
The wheel rim is modeled by using modeling software SOLIDWORKS
2016. By using this software, the time spent in producing the complex 3-
D models and the risk involved in the design and manufacturing process
can be easily minimized. So the modeling of the wheel rim is made by
using SOLIDWORKS. Later this wheel rim modal is imported to ANSYS
WORKBENCH 16 for analysis work.
• ANSYS WORKBENCH 16 is the latest software used for simulating the
different forces, pressure acting on the component and also calculating and
viewing the results.
• By using ANSYS WORKBENCH 16 software reduces the time compared with
the method of mathematical calculations by a human. ANSYS WORKBENCH
16 static structural analysis work is carried out by considered three
different materials namely aluminum alloy, magnesium alloy and structural
steel and their relative performances have been observed respectively.
• In addition to wheel rim is subjected to modal analysis, a part of dynamic
analysis is carried out its performance is observed. In this analysis by
observing the results of both static and dynamic analysis obtained best
material is suggested for making an effective rim structure.
INTRODUCTION
• The rim is the "outer edge of a wheel, holding the tire".[1] It makes up
the outer circular design of the wheel on which the inside edge of
the tire is mounted on vehicles such as automobiles.
• For example, on a bicycle wheel the rim is a large hoop attached to the
outer ends of the spokes of the wheel that holds the tire and tube.
• In cross-section, the rim is deep in the center and shallow at the outer
edges, thus forming a "U" shape that supports for the bead of the tire
casing.
• In the 1st millennium BC, an iron rim was introduced around the
wooden wheels of chariots to improve longevity on rough surfaces.
Type: Depends on the type of vehicle and tire. There are various rim profiles, as well as the
number of rim components.
• Modern passenger vehicles and tubeless tires typically use one-piece rims with a "safety"
rim profile. The safety feature helps keep the tire bead held to the rim under adverse
conditions by having a pair of safety humps extending inwardly of the rim toward the
other tire bead seat from an outer contoured surface of the rim
• Heavy vehicles and some trucks may have a removable multi-piece rim assembly
consisting of a base that mounts to the wheel and axle. They then have either a side ring
or a side and lock ring combination. These parts are removable from one side for tire
mounting, while the opposite side attached to the base has a fixed flange.
• Low tire pressure applications such as off-roading and drag racing use a beadlock that
clamps or physically attaches the bead of the tire to the rim of the wheel. This reduces
the chance of the tire separating from the rim causing a sudden deflation.

• The 3D model of wheel rim is designed in Solid Works. Then it saved
as IGES format where we can import 3D model in to ANSYS.We have
done Static analysis in Workbenchfor wheel rim under radial load to
find the Total Deformation, maximum Principal Elastic strain,
minimum Principal Stress, Equivalent Elastic Strain, Equivalent Stress.
The analysis is done for 3 different material properties such as
Aluminium, Cast Iron, Structural steel. The application of workbench

• The three dimensional model of the wheel was designed using CATIA.
Then the IGES format 3D model was imported into ANSYS. In the
present work a detailed static analysis - displacement, maximum and
minimum vonmises stresses and fatigue analysis of wheel rim under
radial loads has been done. The application of finite element method
for analyzing stress distribution and fatigue life of wheel rim was
summarized.

• Alloy wheels are automobile wheels which are made from an alloy of aluminum
or magnesium metals or sometimes a mixture of both. Alloy wheels differ from
normal steel wheels because of their lighter weight, which improves the steering
and the speed of the car. Alloy wheels will reduce the unstrung weight of a
vehicle compared to one fitted with standard steel wheels. The benefit of
reduced unstrung weight is more precise steering as well as a nominal reduction
in fuel consumption. Alloy is an excellent conductor of heat, improving heat
dissipation from the brakes, reducing the risk of brake failure under demanding
driving conditions. At present four wheeler wheels are made of Aluminum Alloys.
In this project a parametric model is designed for Alloy wheel used in four
wheeler by collecting data from reverse engineering process from existing model.
Design is evaluated by analyzing the model by changing the design of rim styles to
be strong and balanced. Its material should not deteriorate with weathering and
corrosion.
SOLIDWORKS
• Solidworks mechanical design automation software is a feature-based,
parametric solid modelling design tool which advantage of the easy to
learn windows graphical user interface.
• We can create fully associate 3-D solid models with or without while
utilizing automatic or user defined relations to capture design intent.
• Parameters refer to constraints whose values determine the shape or
geometry of the model or assembly.
• Parameters can be either numeric parameters, such as line lengths or
circle diameters, or geometric parameters, such as tangent, parallel,
concentric, horizontal or vertical, etc.
• Numeric parameters can be associated with each other through the use
of relations, which allow them to capture design intent.
• Design intent is how the creator of the part wants it to respond to
changes and updates.
• For example, you would want the hole at the top of a beverage can to
stay at the top surface, regardless of the height or size of the can.
• Solid Works allows you to specify that the hole is a feature on the top
surface, and will then honour your design intent no matter what the
height you later gave to the can.
ANSYS
• Simulation is a design analysis system. Simulation provides simulation
solutions for linear and nonlinear static, frequency, buckling, thermal,
fatigue, pressure vessel, drop test, linear and nonlinear dynamic, and
optimization analyses.
• Powered by fast and accurate solvers, Simulation enables you to solve
large problems intuitively while you design.
• Simulation comes in two bundles:
Simulation Professional and Simulation Premium to satisfy your
analysis needs.
Simulation shortens time to market by saving time and effort in
searching for the optimum design.
• Benefits of Simulation:
• After building your model, you need to make sure that it performs
efficiently in the field.
• In the absence of analysis tools, this task can only be answered by
performing expensive and time-consuming product development
cycles.
