BELAPUR HOUSING

CHARLES CORREA : INCREMENTAL HOUSING, BELAPUR (1983-1986)

A proposal for mass affordable housing to cater all types of income groups .
Demonstrated how high density housing can be achieved with low rise
courtyard homes.

LOCATION : Belapur ,Navi Mumbai , Maharashtra, India.


USERS : Built for the Artists.
AREA : 5.4 Hectares of Land
MATERIALS : Brick , White colour Plaster, Colourful wooden fixtures, Paving
stone blocks for outdoor.

The project is generated by a hierarchy of
spaces.
The first is the private courtyard of single
dwelling used as a space for outdoor activities
during most of the years.
Subsequently 7 units are grouped together to
form a small courtyard town of about
8m x 8m.

Different sets of unit arrangement can be formed using the rules


of shape grammar.

THE CURRENT SCENARIO:

• Many of the buildings are demolished and replaced by concrete structures.


• Courtyards and the hierarchy of community spaces remain intact.
• One third of the original houses are torn down and completely rebuilt .
