It was formed in march 15 th 1985 under the
leadership and guidance of
Shri.C.Achutha Menon,former Chief minister of
Kerala
There teacher and guide was Padmashree Dr. Laurie
baker (late chairman)
Dr.Laurie baker adopted these principles to design residential blocks when
COSTFORD took up the work in Chengalchoola.
LOCATION: Chengalchoola,Trivandrum
Chengalchoola is a slum located in trivandrum
district ,kerala. It is densely populated with around
1000 households,its population counts above 5000.

People here live in houses built under government


housing projects and sheds.Most of the population
are daily wage workers ,factory
workers,autorickshaw driver.

LIG - Low Income Group

Phase 1 - 90 dwelling units


Residential blocks

Each block is designed for accomodation of 10 families

Ground floor - 5 families

First floor - 3 families

Second floor - 2 families

The units where allotted to beneficiaries by the


municipal corporation based on their eligibility.the
beneficiaries also had the opportunity to express their
priorities.They own the house but do not have the
freedom to sell it.

One light point in all rooms - 6 nos

The 3 storeyed building designers with


private open terrace spaces for each
households in the upper storeys not only
provides a large amount of open spaces
which are not affected by the drainage
issues of the slum which is yet to be solved
by the government but also solves the
problem of people feeling isolated in the top
floors when floors are simply stacked one
above the other

Each building is unique due to the gardenings and landscapes by Shops have been constructed
the beneficiaries.

Sheds have been constructed to park their vehicles and has a shop outlet

Open terrace spaces have been converted into gardens ,room by covering it with sheets

and by making cages
For the poultry

The front staircase has gaps in between the steps.This provides


Ventilation to the units on three sides of it.
