Psychometric Evaluation of the Boczar-Kramer

Social Domineering Scale

Dylan Boczar, Max Kramer
Oberlin College

BACKGROUND/AIMS RESULTS
-Conversational dominance is a widely observed phenomenon that is not usually quantified.
Table 1. Factor Loadings From Exploratory Factor Analysis Table 2. Between Groups Differences

-A measure of social domineering was created, defined as one’s tendency to dominate conversations,
based on conversational control and conflict.

-The Boczar-Kramer Social Domineering Scale was evaluated for psychometric soundness.

METHODS
Participants/Procedure

192 participants (68.2% female, 76.3% white, mean age 30.07 [12.91] years) were recruited online Table 3. Concurrent/Discriminant Validity - Correlations with Similar Measures
through Amazon Mechanical Turk, Oberlin PSYC-100, and through friends and family of the
experimenters. Participants completed a Qualtrics survey containing all relevant measures as well as
demographic analyses.

Measures

Boczar-Kramer Social Domineering Scale

A seven item measure of social domineering utilizing a four point Likert scale geared to assess
conversational control (i.e. if someone tries to interrupt me while I’m talking, I don’t stop) and
conversational conflict (i.e. if someone says something I think is wrong, I correct them).

Single Item Measure of Self-Esteem Table 4. Incremental Validity - Predictors of Self-Esteem, Belonging, and Avoidance
(Robins et. al, 2001) A single item measure of self esteem.

Big Five Personality Domains

(Gosling et. al, 2003) A ten item measure of the OCEAN big five personality traits. Only the
extraversion subscale was utilized in these analyses.

Zuckerman–Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire (Shortened, ZKPQ-50-CC)

(Zuckerman et. al, 2006) A 50 item personality index with a binary response format geared to assess
five domains of personality: activity, aggression, sensation seeking/impulsivity, neuroticism/anxiety,
and sociability. Only the aggression, anxiety, and sociability subscales were utilized in these analyses.

Satisfaction with Life Scale

(Diener et. al, 1985) A five-item single factor measure of life satisfaction using a 4 point Likert scale.

Interpersonal Support Evaluation List

DISCUSSION
(Cohen et. al, 1985) A 12-item measure of interpersonal support. Only the belonging support subscale
was utilized in these analyses. - The Boczar-Kramer Social Domineering Scale shows moderately strong evidence for a 2-factor
latent structure.
Data Analytic Plan
- Both BKSDS subscales show strong evidence for convergent/discriminant validity, and the
Construct Validity: Exploratory Factor Analysis conversational control subscale shows strong evidence for concurrent and incremental validity.
Does the two factor latent structure conform to the data collected on the BKSDS?
- Females scored significantly higher on the conversational conflict subscale than males.
Convergent/Discriminant Validity: Bivariate Correlations
Do BKSDS scores correlate with scores on similar measures? - The conversational control subscale demonstrated incremental validity, explaining variance in self-
esteem, social support belonging, and avoidant social inhibition above and beyond sex, employment
Concurrent/Incremental Validity: Multiple Regression
status, and political view.
Are BKSDS scores associated with outcomes of interest above and beyond other measures?

Between-Group Differences: Independent Sample T-Tests - The conversational control and conflict subscales showed convergent validity, correlating with
Are there pre-existing group differences on the BKSDS subscales? Extraversion and Aggression, respectively.
