‘Solutions & Mechanical Mixtures’

By : Mariam Toma
Learning Goals
1- Distinguish the difference between solutions and mechanical mixtures.

2- Identify the difference between solutions and mechanical mixtures using the particle
theory.

3- Relate the lesson content to applications in our real world.

Success Criteria
I will be able to

1- I will be able to differentiate between solutions and mechanical mixtures.

2- I will be able to identify different kinds of mixtures using the particle theory.

3- I will be able to encounter the applications of understanding the chemical

properties of different kinds of mixture in our daily life.
Hands on !
Time for an activity !
Instructions
1- On your table there is 2 bowels and a cup.

2- Open each bowel and examine if you can separate different components of the
mixture physically or not then write down your observation in your handout.

3- Observe the content of the cup and give your assumption whether it is one pure
substance or a mixture and if it is a mixture give your assumptions for it’s content.
Mixtures

1- Mechanical Mixtures

.Can you give examples of mechanical mixture at you home ?

Mechanical Mixtures

.Mechanical Mixtures are heterogeneous mixtures like mixed

cereals,mixed nuts,chocolate chip cookies,soil
and recyclable garbage.

.The particles of the mixture components don’t change it’s physical

property when they are mixed.
Mechanical Mixtures
Particle Theory

.In mechanical mixtures, the different kinds of particles are not mixed evenly, instead
they stay together in groups as a result, when you look at a mechanical mixture you
can see the different kind of matter and you can physically separate them as their
physical properties don’t change upon mixing.
Mechanical Mixtures
Why do we study Mechanical mixtures?

.It is beneficial to have an understanding of the composition of matter

mixtures so we can bake the perfect cake, sort the contents of our
recycling bins and clean up hazardous spills.

.Knowing how to separate mechanical mixtures using many methods like

separating waste mixtures into their components protects the
environment from toxins and allow valuable components to be reused.
Recycle bin
Mixtures

2- Solutions

.Do you see any difference between the two cups?

.Who would like to test and taste ?

Mixtures

2- Solutions

.The sugar changed its physical

property when it's mixed with water
and dissolves from solid to liquid state
Which results in the formation of
sugar water.
Solutions
. Let’s add colour! .What if we add a drop of food coloring to the water?
( Volunteer to add food colouring and other to stir )

. What do you see?

.Can you explain using particle theory ?

.As we experienced in the activity , some mixtures look as pure

substance like orange juice which is a liquid solution of oranges and sugar or the
Canadian coins which is a solid solution made of 3 components nickel, bronze
and copper or steel.
Solutions
Particle Theory

.Particles of the food coloring is mixed evenly with water particles to form a solution.

.In solutions , the different kinds of particles are mixed together evenly , individual
particles are too small to see so when you look at a solution, it looks like just one kind of
matter.
Solutions
Why do we study Solutions?

.Human blood. It is a homogeneous mixture , it’s physical property red liquid but
under the microscope it has many kinds of particles with different functions like Red blood
cells which are responsible for carrying oxygen to body organs, white blood cells which are
part of the immune system and platelets which are responsible for blood clotting.
.To determine the different components of blood helps to diagnose suffers from anemia if
the red blood cell count is low or Immune system disorder if the white blood cell count
is low.
Solutions
Why do we study Solutions?

.When it comes to chemical encounters, remember not to judge a substance based on its
appearance alone. A clear, colourless liquid may not be water like vinegar. It could also
be another pure substance with similar physical properties or a mixture.

.Natural wild almond extract has tiny amount of poisonous cyanide,by studying the
components of the natural extract, chemists could imitate the natural one by a
human-made one by which doesn’t have the poisonous cyanide and cheaper;however
not all human-made chemicals are better for example lemonade made with real lemons
includes lots of vitamin C while lemonade made artificially by chemists doesn’t have less
amount of vitamin C.
Now we can
1- Differentiate between solution mixtures and mechanical mixture.

2- Use the particle theory to identify different kinds of mixtures.

3- Encounter the applications of understanding the chemical properties of different

kinds of mixture in our daily life.
