What Is An Earthquake?
•An earthquake is a sudden and violent
shaking of the ground, sometimes causing
great destruction, as a result of movements
within the earth’s crust or volcanic action
How Do Earthquakes Occur
•It usually occurs when rocks underground
suddenly breaks along a fault. This sudden
release of energy causes the “seismic
waves” that make the ground shake.

1985 Mexico City Earthquake
• The 1985 Mexico City earthquake struck in the early morning of 19
September at 07:17:50 (6:50 pm in PH time) with a moment
magnitude of 8.0 and a Mercalli intensity of IX. The event caused
serious damage to the Greater Mexico City area and the deaths of at
least 5,000 people.
Casualties: 5,000-45,000 dead and 30,000 injured
Great Hanshin Earthquake
The Great Hanshin earthquake, or Kobe earthquake, occurred on January 17, 1995
at 05:46:53 JST in the southern part of Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, including the
region known as Hanshin. It measured 6.9 on the moment magnitude scale and
had a maximum intensity of 7 on the JMA Seismic intensity scale.
Casualties: 5,502–6,434 killed; 36,896–43,792 injured; 251,301–
310,000 displaced
Tōhoku Earthquake
• DescriptionThe 2011 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tōhoku was a
magnitude 9.0–9.1 undersea megathrust earthquake off the coast of
Japan that occurred at 14:46 JST on Friday 11 March 2011, with the
epicentre.
• Casualties: 15,897 deaths, +2 (Overseas), 6,157 injured, 2,532 people
missing
2013 Bohol Earthquake.
• he 2013 Bohol earthquake occurred on October 15 at 8:12:31 PST in
Bohol, an island province located in Central Visayas, Philippines. The
magnitude of the earthquake was recorded at Mw 7.2, with epicenter
6 kilometres S 24° W of Sagbayan, and its depth of focus was 12
kilometres.
