DEPOSITS INSURANCE AMTS. IN RS. CRORES

 All your money, to a maximum of Rs 5 lakh is insured by

DICGC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the RBI.

 Deposit insurance was static at Rs 1 lakh since 1993. Soon after the Union Budget
2020 announcement, insurance cover on bank deposits has been increased from Rs 1
lakh to Rs 5 lakh.
 All commercial banks including branches of foreign banks functioning in India, local
area banks, Regional Rural Banks and all co-operative banks are insured by the DICGC.
 DICGC insures all deposits such as savings, current, fixed, recurring etc. deposits
except Government Deposits, Inter-Bank Deposits.
 If a bank goes into liquidation, reconstructed or amalgamated / merged with another
bank or cancellation of bank’s license, the DICGC pays the bank concerned.
 Who pays the cost of deposits insurance?
- Deposits insurance premium is borne
entirely by the insured bank.
 All funds held in the same type of ownership at the same
bank are added together before deposit insurance is
determined. If the funds are in different types of ownership
or are deposited into separate banks they would then be
separately insured.
 Premium Paid @ 5 paise per Rs. 100 deposits per half year.

CD RATIO AMTS. IN RS. CRORES

 Credit-deposit ratio popularly know as CD ratio is the ratio of how much a bank
lends out of the deposits it has mobilized.
 CD ratio helps in assessing a bank’s liquidity and indicates its health.
 A very low ratio indicates banks are not making full use of their resources, if the
CD ratio is too low, banks may not be earning as much as they could be.
 A high ratio indicates more reliance on deposits for lending, if the ratio is too
high, it means that the banks might not have enough liquidity to cover any
unforeseen fund requirements, may affect capital adequacy and asset-liability
mismatch.
 RBI does not stipulate minimum or maximum level for the ratio, but an ideal CD
ratio is 60%.

 Banks make money by taking in funds from depositors and other sources and
then lending money out to customers.
 The bank spread is the difference between what the interest a bank must pay
to obtain the funds and the rate the bank charges on the loan.
 For example, a bank might pay 3% interest to a depositor and charge a
customer 11% interest on a loan. The 8 percentage points is the bank's spread
and its profit.
 Banks earn interest from investments also.

Transfer Price Mechanism (TPM)
 The prime motto of any business organization is to earn profit, which is necessary for
survival of any institution.
 The branches of banks are spread in different geographical and economic areas
having different business and earning potentiality. The level playing field is not the
same.
 At some centres there may not be much economic activity and earning avenues due
to no scope of lending. But there may be scope and potentials for deposits i.e.,
resource mobilisation. The situation can just be reverse at another centre.
 Hence, at one centre bank’s earning may be more due to its advances portfolio and at
the other centre it may be just the reverse as the centre has only deposit potentials.
Though bank needs both i.e. resources and its deployment.
 Hence a compensatory receipt and payment system has to be followed which would
reflect true and fair picture of branch profits and its efficiency. This mechanism is
known as “ Transfer Price Mechanism”.
 Objectives of Transfer Price Mechanism
 Internal profit distribution.
 To evaluate the true profit and operational efficiency of branches.
 To adequately compensate both deposit mobilising & deploying branches
 To effect equitable distribution of profit
 To deliver stable source of funding over time.
