Religion

prophet, Mohammed is his final messenger.
 Islam is derived from the Judeo-Christian tradition and considers
Abraham and Jesus as prophets.

BACKGROUND TO PARTITION
 Two Nation theory

 Muhammad Iqbal suggested a state

 Choudhary Rahmat Ali coined the name of


PAKISTAN
 Pakistan came into existence in August 1947, With
West and East Pakistan separated by more than
1,000 miles of Indian territory .
 Sindh, Baluchistan, and the North-West Frontier
came to Pakistan. The Punjab and Bengal were
divided, and Kashmir became

disputed territory.

 Three major wars have

been fought .
The First War: (October 1947 -December 1948)

 Conflict between India and Pakistan over Kashmir.

 All areas which were more than 70% Muslim were suppose to go
into Pakistan ,the rest would be India.
 “Princely states" would be left to decide on their own.

 The Maharaja of Kashmir joined India and requested the assistance


of the Indian Army.
 The Indian Army arrived immediately, the same day, and Pakistan
attacked the next day.
 The result so far is that India controls almost two-thirds of Kashmir
and Pakistan controls one-third. China controls the rest. The conflict
continues.
Indo-Pakistan War of 1965

 The second Indo-Pakistani conflict (1965) was also fought


over Kashmir.
 On August 5, 1965 between 26,000 and 33,000 Pakistani
soldiers crossed the Line of Control.
 The initial battles between India and Pakistan were contained
within Kashmir involving both infantry and armor units with
each country's air force playing major roles.
 The PAF claimed it shot down 104 IAF planes and lost 19 of
its own.
 During the conflict the PAF was out-numbered by around 5:1
 The PAF's fighter force comprised 102 F-86F Sabers and 12
F-104 Star fighters, along with 24 B-57 Canberra bombers.
 The largest engagement

of the war occurred in the

Sialkot region where some

400 to 600 tanks squared off.

Indo-Pakistan War of 1971

 conflict was sparked by the Bangladesh Liberation


war, a conflict between the traditionally dominant
West Pakistanis. and the majority East Pakistanis.
 Election of 1971, in which the East Pakistani Awami
League won 167 of 169 seats in East Pakistan and
secured a simple majority in the 313-seat lower house
of the Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament of Pakistan).
 Awami League leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman
presented the Six Points to the President of Pakistan
and claimed the right to form the government.
 Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, refused to Mujibur.

 Yahya Khan called the military toward east Pakistan.

 The East Pakistan-India border was opened to allow refugees


safe shelter in India.
 Officially, the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 started On the
evening of 3 December Sunday.
 The shortest wars in history.

 India took approximately 90,000 prisoners of war, including


Pakistani soldiers and their East Pakistani civilian supporters.
Agreements b/w Pak & India

 In sep 19, 1960, Pakistan and India signed “Indus


water treaty” at Karachi.

a) India has the control on water of

Ravi, Beas and Sutlej.

b) Pakistan has control on the water

of Jhelum ,Chenab & Indus river .


 In 1971,the agreement signed that

called Shimla agreement.


 In 1988, they both signed agreement, that they will never attack an
other’s atomic plants & reactors.

 In 1999 b/w May and July , Kargil conflict took place between in
the Kargil district of Kashmir and elsewhere along the Line of Control
(LOC).

 After Bombay attacks in 2008 ,

both Paki & Indian defenders, once

again became ready to attack each

another.

 The major news agencies in Pakistan are the Associated Press of

 The Government took over The Associated Press of Pakistan in
1960.
 Radio is an effective method for spreading news in Pakistan
because the literacy rate is not as high as it is in countries like the
United States.
 The Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation spreads information
about government policy and promotes Islamic principles.
 By the mid 1990’s television reached 80% of the Pakistan
population and media become privatize.
 Today media is very fast and top ranked media around world.
