WHAT IS ENVIRONMENT?

• Environment is a whole of conditions surrounding us.


• The dictionary meaning of the environment is—The surroundings or conditions in which a person,
animal, or plant lives or operates.
• The aggregate of all external and internal conditions affecting the existence, growth, and welfare of
organisms.
• The complex of physical, chemical, and biotic factors (as climate, soil & living things) that act upon
an organism or all ecological community and ultimately determine its form and survival.
• These dictionary definitions state that there-
Something has surrounded.
Surrounded by something,
And somewhere surrounded.
DEFINITIONS
• According to C.C. Park – environment refers to the sum total of conditions
which surround man at a given point in space and time.
• According to harishchandra sharma – natural environment include water, air
and land and the inter-relationship that exists, among and between water, air
and land, human beings, other living creatures, plant, micro-organisms, and
property.
• In the words of german scientist fittings— the totality of milieu factors of an
organism is environment.
• According to a.G. Tansley – “all the effective conditions in which organism lives
are called as environment.
CONCEPT OF ENVIRONMENT :Air, water, land, living organisms
and materials surrounding us & their interactions together
constitute environment.

GREEN ADVOCACY

• Increased emphasis on implementing acts & laws related to environment.


• Need for environmental lawyers emerged.
• Plead the cases related to water and air pollution, forest, wildlife etc.

• ISO mark (quality of product)


• Emphasis on marketing eco-friendly goods
• Eco-mark certification
• In future environment Auditors and environment Managers would be in
great demand
GREEN MEDIA

• Environmental awareness can be spread amongst masses 


• TV, radio, news paper, magazines, hoardings, advertisements etc.
• Requirement of environmentally educated people
• Many ngos, industries and govt bodies are engaging environmental
consultants for systematically studying and tackling env. Related problems

ENVIRONMENTAL COMMUNICATION

• Environmental communication refers to the study and practice of how individuals,


institutions, societies, and cultures craft, distribute, receive, understand, and use
messages about the environment and human interactions with the environment.
This includes a wide range of possible interactions, from interpersonal
communication to virtual communities, participatory decision making, and
environmental media coverage. From the perspective of practice, it as the
application of communication approaches, principles, strategies and techniques to
environmental management and protection.
• Environmental communication is also a type of symbolic action that serves
two functions. Those functions are realistic and constitutive. Environmental
communication is realistic because it helps individuals and organizations to
accomplish goals and literally do things through communication.
Environmental communication is constitutive because it helps to shape
people's understandings of environmental issues, themselves, and nature; it
shapes the meanings we hold of these things. Examples of this include values,
attitudes, and ideologies regarding nature and environmental issues and
problems.
• Environmental communication is a process of disseminating messages about
environmental issues.
OBJECTIVES
The main objectives are-
• Inform about environmental issues i.e. climate change, pollution, global warming etc.
• Educate about environment, its component, and importance of resources.
• Aware about numerous challenges of environment.
• Encourage people to work for environment.
• Motivate people to fight with environmental issues.
• Appreciate people who are working in this field to solve environmental problem.
• Develop participatory approach.

ROLE OF MEDIA
• Media play a dynamic role in creating awareness among people on various
environmental issues. From its primary goal of to inform, educate and
aware; it encourage, appreciate and motivate people to save and protect
environment. Media can bring significant change in our mindset towards
the use of natural resources.
• Media is very important tool of image creation and influencing public
perception because of their reach across almost population and its ability to
convey message among heterogeneous public. It has power to change public
perception over an issue and involve them in process of change.
