• Make sure to clarify whether the information is a
fact or simply an opinion.
• Verbally cite your sources during your presentation.
• Avoid using offensive language. No to off-colored
jokes, racist or sexist statements. NO TO HATE
SPEECH.

• This is fundamental to responsible thinking, decision
making, and the development of relationships and
communities within and across contexts, cultures,
channels and media.
• Unethical communication threatens the quality of all
communication and consequently the well-being of
the society.
WHO ARE ETHICAL
COMMUNICATORS? (US NCA, 1999)
• They advocate truthfulness, accuracy, honesty and reason.
• They endorse freedom of expression, diversity of perspective,
and tolerance of dissent.
• They condemn communication that degrades individuals and
humanity through distortion, intimidation, coercion and
violence, and through the expression of intolerance and hatred.
• They accept responsibility for the consequences of their
communication and expect the same of others.
PROJECT
• Conduct a recorder interview with a respected local personality in the
field of public speaking. Ask him or her the following questions:
– In your opinion, how can social media users be ethical in online
communication?
– Is honesty still a virtue valued today? Why or why not?
– When you think of politicians today, would you say that they have been
communicating in an ethical manner?
– Can you give historical examples that show why hate speech is a
problem?
– Why is it important to be ethical in communication today?
