TANGRAMS

• The tangram had already been around in

china for a long time when it was first brought
to America by captain M Donnaldson on his
ship trader in 1815.
• Tangrams-seven boards of skill, is a
dissection puzzle consisting of seven flat
shape called tans, which are put together to
form shapes.
• It is a geometric puzzle which originated in
China, and is made from three basic
geometric shapes.
Classic Chinese Tangram
• Tangram is a kind of jigsaw puzzle: assemble
seven geometric pieces, without overlap, to
form charming, elegant, sophisticated, and
sometimes paradoxical figures.
• We can obtain a set of the Tangram by
dissecting a square into seven pieces as the
figure shown below.
Classic Chinese Tangram
The seven pieces can be rearranged to
form thousands of different figures of
geometric shapes (triangles,
parallelograms, polygons and etc.),
people in motion, animals(cats, dogs,pigs,
horses and etc.), and bridges, houses,
pagodas, letters of the alphabet and some
Chinese characters.
Early Tangram
The 14 pieces puzzle on the
right can be seen as an early
version of Tangram. It was
first referred in Archimedes’
work in 3rd century BC as
“Stomachion,” meaning
‘problem that makes one
insane’. A discovery in
1906 in Saint Sabba of Jerusalem shows the puzzle was
dissected from a big square not the previously known two
smaller squares.
HISTORY

• Ancient Chinese Puzzles

• Begins with a square
• Each piece is called Tan.
All pieces must be used
They must touch, but not overlap.
LEGEND
• A Chinese man Tan’s greatest
possession was fine ceramic tile.
• He dropped a tile on his way to show the
emperor and it broke to 7 geometric
shapes.
• Spent the rest of his life in putting them
back together.
• He was not successful, however he
succeeded in creating many designs.
• Tan enjoyed creating designs and later
called as Tangrams.
• It is the oldest and most enduring
geometric puzzles.
USE

• Used in storytelling
 Storyteller arranges the tan to show
the shape of the character.
 Pieces are rearranged to represent
the new characters or elements in
the story.
