LETTERS OF PAUL
 1st Thessalonians

 Earliest letter of Paul found in the

book of acts.
Paul and his co-worker, Silas, went to an

ancient city of Greece that is

Thessalonica to tell the good news and

spread the word of God.

Many of the Jews formed an

allegiance to Paul and his men then

later established the “Church of

Thessalonica”.

BUT…
 These suspicion led to persecution of
those who believe in the teachings of
Paul. Paul and Silas were forced to
flee and it was so painful for them
because the love the people there.

The roman emperor, Julius

Caesar, mistakenly accused the

teaching of Paul as defying his

rule. That there is another king

named Jesus.
 Timothy told Paul that the
Thessalonians are doing okay and
they are flourishing despite the
persecution that was going on. This
led Paul designed the 1st
Thessalonians with 2 main
movements.
 A Celebration of Faithfulness
(1:0-10)
Paul started with thanking God for
faith, love, and hope despite
persecution
 He talked about their idolatry to
Greek Gods and how they turned
away from idols to serve the living
true God.
(2:1-12)
 He said to them that spreading the
Thanksgiving
good news is not to gain power but
Prayer
to build healthy relationships to
the people.
(2:13-16)
 This talks about their suffering as a
way of participating the story of
Jesus.
(2:17-3:10)
 Paul sent Timothy to check the
people in Thessalonica and was
glad to hear that they are doing
good because of their faith and
hope to the coming back of Jesus.
A Challenge to Grow
(4:1-8)
 Paul told the Thessalonians to stay
committed to holiness and sexual
purity because pre-marital sex
dishonor and destroy people’s
dignity.
(4:9-12)
 Commitment to love and service
 To provide their needs by enduring
efforts and sharing these to others.

Endurance Hope
 Future hope of Jesus’ return
 The Jewish people asked if what
will happen to those who died in
persecution then Paul answered
that those who have died in the
Messiah will rise.
(5:1-11)
 Hope should motivate faithfulness
 Unlike Caesar’s way of
peacefulness Jesus’ does not
include violence and deaths.

Reminds us that from the very beginning GENEROSITY

of following Jesus produces a counter-
cultural way of life or Holiness BE MOTIVATED BY HOPE IN THE
COMING OF

JESUS
