Narrative Comparison

How do public and private schools differ? The educational system in the Philippines
has been greatly influenced by the country's colonial history, specifically the Spanish and
American occupations. And today's education system, which mandates education from the
age of five to eighteen, is primarily modeled after the American’s educational system. There
are numerous schools in the Philippines, however there are two primary types of schools that
divide students: public and private schools. Local Filipino children attend government-funded
public schools, which are free to attend, and those who can afford to pay tuition can attend
private schools, which are not government-funded but follow the same curriculum as public
schools. A survey for Public and Private Analysis of Social Systems is conducted by the
students under Prof Ed-8: The teacher and the community, school culture, and organizational
leadership subject. The School Analysis of Social System survey will assist us in determining
the distinction between the two institutions' educational systems.

The differences between public and private schools manifest themselves in a variety
of ways. According to the School Analysis of Social System survey, both institutions have
completed and are continuously practicing the Social System Models, but what distinguishes
them from one another are their methods and systems that they follow, as well as their
stakeholders. The most popular private schools in the Philippines are typically owned by
Catholics and supervised by Sisters and/or Priest, whereas public schools are supervised by
the government. Saint Francis Academy, a private catholic school respondent is supervised
by the religious Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and they practice men
and women disciples of Jesus, humility, simplicity, gentleness, love for all creation, justice,
and peace. There activities make sure that children are connected to nature and of God. They
own a private land in Magbugnaw, Balamban, Cebu and named it Mother Marie Louise De
Meester Forestry as a societal contribution because it supported people living there to find
work in the forest and, more importantly, in the preservation of nature. They also help
individual students who are financially unstable by providing a scholarship called “Cunina
Scholars”, which is supported by godparents in Belgium. Through the Student Body
Association, they also ensure that students grow up to be responsible citizens and leaders in
the Philippines by teaching them the art of self-government, intelligent leadership, and
respect for the rights of others. Aside from developing a sense of leadership, they also hold a
Recollection Day outside of campus to free students from academic work and reconnect them
with God's presence, as well as express their pain and sadness to their friends. The majority
of their activities take place outside of campus, such as their Nature Lover's Activity Day for
the environment, and their core values are centered on oneness and connection to God,
Nature, and Humans. The school also guarantees that the students graduate competent and
ready to conquer the world; they have complete facilities, opened their institution to
government made such ESC to cater to the students' financial needs, emotionally and
mentally support, and have sufficient knowledge.

On the other hand, Carmen Central Elementary School, a public school respondent,
shares the same Mission, Vision, and Core Values throughout the Philippines and is
supervised by the School Principal down to its Grade level master teachers, advisers, special
teachers, and non-teaching staff. Unlike at Saint Francis Academy, the majority of activities
in public schools are held on campus for the safety of the students. They also have the “Purok”
System, which allows each pupil's learning progress to be tracked even if they are enrolled in
a modular distance learning program. Participation in extracurricular activities such as
camping, declamation, and so on help to develop independent students in public schools.
Furthermore, because public school is a supportive and culturally based environment for
children, colorful and meaningful celebrations such as nutrition month, buwan ng wika,
United Nations, and so on are held on campus every month. Carmen Central Elementary
School, like any other schools in the Philippines such as Saint Francis Academy, strives to
develop students into more responsible citizens and leaders in the Philippines through the
election of SPG, PTA, Teachers Officers, and Class Officers. Public schools also participate
in environmental activities such as tree planting, clean-up drives, and gardening. They also
ensure that, in addition to extracurricular activities and connections to nature, they help
students develop skills, creativity, enthusiasm, and so on, and this is accomplished through
partnerships with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as RAFI, Groiler
International Inc., and many others. Finally, make sure that students graduate competent and
prepared to face the world that awaits them in the future.

The School Analysis of Social System survey assisted us in distinguishing the


educational systems of the two institutions, and it demonstrates that both institutions are
distinctively unique from one another. Both public and private schools are beautiful places to
learn and grow; stakeholders from private catholic schools may differ from those from public
schools; but still both educators provide quality education and guidance for students; and
helping the environment may be done in a variety of ways; however, no matter how small or
big the help, it will be remembered. The public school students is more on receiving
donations while the private school students tends to give donations for those who need help.
The celebrations may vary from one institution to another, but the memories will last a
lifetime. Studying is hard, but because of the strangers who turn friendships into a big family,
no matter how difficult life becomes, suffering will be worthwhile; studying in public school
does not mean being different from students in private schools; everyone is special and
unique regardless of where we study.
