1830 PSS-32 Network Element

The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS-32 system supports three

types of shelves:
universal, DCM, and SFD.

Universal shelf
• The universal shelf is the basic building block for
the Alcatel-Lucent 1830
PSS-32 network element (NE). It provides a framework
for all active modules
in a system (such as controller, interface cards, etc.).
DCM and SFD shelves
• DCM and OMD shelves (SFD shelves) are passive
module shelves that hold DCM and SFD44 modules.
• These modules provide dispersion compensation and
optical mux/demux function associated with core
optics modules (line drivers and CWR8, respectively)
that are present in the universal shelf.
• Each Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS-32 Network Element
(NE) includes up to 16 universal shelves
and up to 24 DCM/SFD shelves

Power and Grounding
• Nominal voltage is –48V or -60V DC
• Operate fault-free in a voltage range of
-40V DC to -72V DC.
• Each shelf has its own power connections
• Fully redundant, with two circuits, A
and B, able to supply power to the
shelf. Redundant power feeds (A and B)
are connected to the power modules
• Power filters are available in 20, 30A, 50A,
60,
and 70A capacity
• Tolerance battery voltage decreases
below 45V ±1.5V, the Low Battery
Voltage alarm for feed is triggered
• Shelf power and ground connectors
are located as shown

All Rights Reserved © Alcatel-Lucent 2012

Cooling

• Shelf is cooled by three variable-speed fans

• Fan tray located near top of shelf
• Provide full carrier class redundancy. In the
event of any single failure, fans continue to
operate, up to the maximum long-term
operational temperature limit defined in
NEBS
• Incoming air is filtered through a
replaceable air filter

• Filler Blanks are required for proper airflow

and cooling

Backplane and Back Access

Provides the interface between the cards and the

shelf, and the electrical
connectivity between the cards inserted in the shelf.
Used to supply power to the cards and transfer data
and control information
across the shelf.
When you insert a card into the shelf, the female
connectors on the card
mate with the high-density male electrical
connectors located on the
backplane to make the connection.
In general, No customer traffic flows across the shelf
backplane (traffic runs through optical fibers
connecting card faceplate connectors) – exception .

No Back Access is required for the 1830 PSS

DCM and SFD Shelves

SFD Shelf
The SFD44 (44-channel DWDM static filter)
is modeled as an SFD shelf with a
SFD44 card
The inventory port of the SFD44 can be
connected to an inventory port on a
CWR-88/WR8-88A card

DCM Shelf
A DCM enclosure can hold a maximum of 16
DCM modules
The system models each DCM module as a
separate shelf

1830 PSS-32 Multiple Shelf Applications

When used in a multiple-shelf configuration, each 1830 PSS-32 shelf has a shelf ID
Number that can be configured via a physical mechanism (rotary dial) on the
backplane. Up to eight bits of information can be set.
Shelf ID determines identity of each universal shelf in the cluster, while the most
significant bit of the rotary dial determines its role (that is, main or extension
shelf).

• Master Shelf EC provides system storage (software for all
line cards and stores system log files)
• Each universal shelf contains at least one active EC.
Standby EC can be configured (and equipped) to provide
controller redundancy
• EC removal or reboot should not impact existing traffic
• GMPLS nodes will not reroute/restore
• Non-revertive protection arrangement
• Master EC if installed in shelf with ID 1
• Subtending shelf ECs provides protected communication
with the EC in the main shelf (Master EC for a node)
• Two main types – 4G and 16G Flash storage
• 16G Flash required for ECX s/w loads (required to
support GMPLS)
• Console port access via cut-out on card faceplate (for lab
debug only – typically connected to lab terminal servers)

Power Filter
 Battery plant redundant feeds are brought into the
system through the power filter (PF) modules and
distributed to each slot through the backplane pins.
 External (typically, battery generated) DC voltages
are filtered by the two PFs and distributed within
the shelf by a copper power plane.
 Each PF provides the 3.6V service voltage that is
distributed by the backplane. PFs also provide
power to the USRPNL panel in the main shelf
 There are four types of PF modules (based on the
maximum current supported by embedded circuit
breaker): 20, 30A, 50A and 70A
 Power filters consumes 10W
 Precision clock source (Stratum 3 accuracy, +/-4.6
ppm) used by
– OTs to generate Wavelength Tracker
modulation
– WT detect points on other cards
– Clock source for other transmission-related
services.
 Temperature sensor that measures inlet air
temperature for FAN control algorithm (adjusting FAN
speed based on inlet temperature)

Fan Module
• The fan tray plugs directly into the backplane and connects to the power,
control, and monitoring leads
• Located directly above the line card slots
• Three FAN modules, each individually monitored and speed-controlled by
network element (NE) software
• High capacity fan tray, FAN32H (PN 8DG59606AB), must be installed in PSS-32
if certain line cards are installed: (11QPEN4, 43SCA1, 43SCX4, 43SCX4E,

User Interface Panel
Connected to the main shelf and provides the following interfaces:
􀂃 Visual status indication (node LED indication)
􀂃 Management and communication physical access points
􀂃 External Input/Output access points
􀂃 Miscellaneous interactive buttons
Management and communication access points consist of the following interfaces:
􀂃 Four general-purpose switched auto-sensing LAN ports (10/100BaseTX), for connection
to EMS/NMS, VoIP, and externally managed devices. The OAMP port connect NE to the
External Management System (EMS). The VoIP port connect an IP phone to an IP
managed DCN within Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS-32 domain. The two external LAN ports
connect to externally managed devices. These ports are auto-sensing, so either a crossover
or straight-thru Ethernet cable can be used.
􀂃 Two craft ports. One is designed as a female (DB9) and the other a USB-B port. Both
support local RS-232C serial interface (support setting: 9600 baud, 1 stop bit, no
parity) for connection to craft terminal via a serial link. When USB-B port and DB9
ports are simultaneously connected, preference is given to the USB-B port. The USB-B
port becomes active, and the DB9 port is rendered inactive.
External input/output access points are implemented as DB-9, DB-15, and DB-25
connectors

Bi-directional Line Driver (LD) Amplifiers
Both fiber directions pass thru these LDs, but only Line In to Signal Out is amplified

Opposite direction (Signal In to Line Out) is power-monitored and has OSC filter to add 1510 nm OSC Tx signal,
but no optical amplification.

Each LD contains two MON ports that can be connected to customer monitoring
equipment for monitoring the optical signal after the amplifier and output to the span.

Optional dispersion compensation modules (DCMs) are fibered to the mid-stage access
ports of amplifiers that support mid-stage access.

When a DCM is not used, a 10-dB pad is placed on the DCM port using a simplex fiber.

On older LDs, OSC SFP is installed internal to card (new LDs have faceplate OSC SFP with external fiber jumper
connections).

Respun Bi-dir Amps – Design View
 The current bi-directional LD amplifiers have the OSC SFP built internally within
the circuit pack. This design has led to a very high rate of returns due to damaged
fibers and/or connectors associated with the SFP-OSC link.
 New design has the OSC SFP extruded from the amplifier faceplate, akin to the
current modular (uni-dir) amplifiers.
 Two faceplate fiber jumpers are required on new bi-dir ingress amps to connect
OSC filter ports to the OSC SFP ports

Integrated RAMAN 2 pumps optimized for C-Band

 Full-height, one slot pack
 Need High-power fan when used in PSS32 shelf
 Must reside in slot 7 when used in PSS16 shelf
 Support two pumps, one at 1425 and the other at 1454 nm. Each pump delivers
up to 320 mW of output power, as measured at the faceplate
 Includes a gain flattening filter designed to deliver optimum flatness for high-
quality LEAF when the pumps are operated at full power. Slightly higher gain
ripple is expected for SSMF and TWRS fiber
 With maximum pumping and favorable span conditions, the net target gain of the
DWDM channels, under maximum pumping: 10 dB for SSMF; 14 dB for LEAF; 16 dB
for TWRS
 For the OSC, the corresponding net target gain: 6.5 dB for SSMF; 9.5 dB for LEAF;
11.5 dB for TWRS
 Warning: to be preferred to the RA3P application

Multi-Cast Switch and Amplifier Array
• Colorless, AnyDirection, Contentionless (CDC) add/drop is provided by the Multi-Cast Switch (MCS) card – it
allows any coherent WDM carrier from a 100G uplink card to be switched to any optical degree. It can also carry
without interference multiple WDM carriers of the same color/wavelength that are being switched to different
degrees, providing “contentionless” throughput.

• The MCS is always deployed with an Amplifier Array on connections to the WSS in order to boost the signal. It is
needed because of the high insertion loss of the WSS and the MCS.

AAR-8A – Amplifier Array

• Each AAR-8A support bidirectional
amplification for 4-degrees
• Two AAR-8A are used together with
a single MCS8-16 to provide support
for up to 8-degrees
MCS8-16 – Multi-Cast Switch
• Provides multicasting for up to
8-optical degrees
• Supports up to 16 client ports
• Deployed in conjunction with
one or two AAR-8A circuit
packs, allowing equippage
based on the node’s degree size
(4 or less; 5 to 8)

CWR8/CWR8-88 Module
Colorless 8-channel Wavelength Router (CWR8) packs support drop, through, and add
path.
Incoming channels go through the first coupler, and part of the signal goes to
broadband drop port that connects to the demux port of the SFD44/10/5 for colored
drop.
Signal can connect to a test port at the input to verify the connectivity during
commissioning.
Up to eight (8) colorless drops are routed to service ports 1-8 of the 1x9 WSS.
When mesh is supported, one or more of these ports become mesh output ports. No
limitation exists on which of colorless ports are being used as mesh from optical
architecture point of view.
Through channels are routed to through port 9 of the 1x9 WSS.
The WSS has adjustable per-channel attenuation for equalizing drop and thru channels
Colorless add channel comes into the CWR8 from the OT via an 8x1 combiner and
are coupled with the colored add channel that comes from the SFD before the
add-amplifier.
The add-amplifier is a fixed gain C-band EDFA. The output of this amplifier goes
through a VOA and is then combined with the through channel on a single fiber to
feed into the LD. CWR88

Static Filters

Static Filter DWDM (SFD) modules perform the following functions

 Optical multiplexer function: receives colored optical signal from the transponder sub-
system, multiplexes the signal (together with other bands) into a WDM signal, and
launches the WDM signal to the OTS line directly (with or without an amplification) or to
the colorless port of CWR8 module
 Optical demultiplexer function: receives the WDM line signal, demultiplexes this signal,
and sends the individual optical channels to the transponder sub–system
 1830 PSS-32 supports three types of Static Filter DWDM modules
 Static Filter DWDM 5 channel (SFD5) module which can be inserted in one half-height,
single-width slot of the universal shelf
 Static Filter DWDM 8 channel (SFD8) module which can be inserted in one full-height,
single-width slot of the universal shelf
 Static Filter DWDM 44 channel (SFD44/SFD44B) module that is implemented as a passive
module mounted in a rack outside the universal shelf. Inventory monitoring for SFD44 is
accomplished via CWR8 or LD electrical inventory access points
 CWDM Filters

Used on the drop side.

Interleaver Demux
The ITLU is designed to be used in combination
with the SFD44 and SFD44B. TheSFD44 and
SFD44B each combine and demux 44 SIG LC EVEN - OUT
LC
wavelength signals at 100GHz. However, the IN
signals of the SFD44B are offset 50GHz from the LC ODD- OUT

2
signals of the SFD44.

EEPROM
The ITLU demuxes the odd and even sets of

INV
signals coming from the WR8-88A Drop Out

1
port.
The ITLU is a passive module that is installed in

IN
the same enclosure as the DCMs. It has an
ITLU
inventory port that can be connected to the
inventory port of a WR8-88A.

88 Channel Wavelength Router - WR8-88A

The WR8-88A broadcasts all received channels to the DROP Out port and the three (3) MESH OUT ports,
and selects channels from the eight (8) ADD IN ports onto a single outgoing fiber connected to the LD Type
Pack
The WR8-88A will support 8 optical lines and 88 channels from the 88 channel grid
The WR8-88A is a pack that, in the drop direction, passes the OMS signal received on the SIG port from the
optical line to the MESH OUT 1-3 ports, the DROPOUT port, and the THRU port.
In the add direction, the WR8-88 circuit pack combines the signals input to the THRU and ADD IN 1-8 ports
through the WSS.
The WR8-88 contains an additional laser to simulate 3 channels on the line.
The WR8-88A will manage all 88 channels.

WTOCM (WT Optical Channel Monitoring) module

The WTOCM module can be added to a NE to monitor up to four WTD

ports with enhanced Wave Key instance and power per channel
detection capability designed for use in high capacity long haul
transmission systems.
 WT-OCM card is half height single slot wide module
 4 monitoring ports per card (one WT-OCM per 2 OTS lines)
 Card provisioning and association between WT-OCM input port and
LD monitoring port configured during system commissioning (either
during initial system turn-up or in-service upgrade, example
procedure shown in the package)
 Power readings are calibrated dynamically by the WTOCM to the
line side associated port
 Power per channel measurement accuracy is better then +/- 0.5 dB
 Scan of each of the 4 input ports performed once every 2 seconds
(measurement of per channel powers and WT key instance
identification per OCh)

Detection

 WT-OCM employs tuneable filter based monitoring technique (as opposed to

integrated Wavelength Tracker detector which uses a broadband PIN detector for
continuous detection of the subcarrier tones)
 Tuneable filter scans the optical spectrum obtaining channel power and, for those
channels that had been encoded with the Wavelength Tracker keys at network
ingress, channel instance ID.
 By isolating the wavelength from all other wavelengths using a tuneable filter, during
the power and ID measurement, the impact of crosstalk effects on measurement
accuracy is significantly reduced. Thus this technology is suitable for Regional and
Long haul networks where higher powers and therefore higher non-linearities, are
predominant

Dispersion Compensation Module (DCM)

 Provides unidirectional compensation for chromatic dispersion on the network fiber

 Chromatic dispersion is an optical effect that causes a light pulse to "spread" as it

travels down a fiber:
 The amount of dispersion is directly related to the distance the light travels. The
longer the distance, the greater the dispersion.
 At a certain distance the dispersion becomes so great that the receiver can no
longer successfully interpret the signal, and a DCM must be deployed to reverse
the effects of the dispersion.

 DCMs for standard single-mode (ITU-T G.652) fiber routes are

available for compensating 10, 20, 30, -------140 km in 10km increment

 DCMs are installed at the mid-stage of optical amplifiers and compensate for the
line
– You can Install the DCM on the line for special applications
 Other type of DCM compensation modules are available for other fiber types

Dispersion Compensation Module (DCM)
 Provides unidirectional compensation for chromatic dispersion on the network fiber
 Chromatic dispersion is an optical effect that causes a light pulse to "spread" as it
travels down a fiber – too much dispersion will cause OT receiver errors.
 The amount of dispersion is directly related to the distance the light travels. The
longer the distance, the greater the dispersion. Dispersion has a greater impact on
higher bit-rate signals.
 Fiber-based DCMs for standard single-mode (ITU-T G.652) fiber routes are available for
compensating backbone fiber lengths in 10 km increments from 10 to 140 km
 Fiber-Bragg Grating-based DCMs are available for systems requiring lower latency or
lower loss (in various distance increments).
 Fiber-based DCMs are matched to backbone fiber type (SSMF, LEAF, TWRS)
 DCMs are installed at the mid-stage of optical amplifiers and compensate all channels
within the C-Band
 DWDM systems with only Coherent Detection OTs do not require optical dispersion
compensation (CD and PMD can be corrected using DSP algorithms)
 For lab systems, DCMs are only required if spools of backbone fiber are installed – can
be replaced with 10 dB attenuators (pads) on lab systems with no fiber.
 The number and type of DCM modules is determined by the Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS-
32/PSS-16 Engineering and Planning Tool.

What is an OT = Optical Transponder ?

1830 PSS Optical Transponders perform the following basic functions:

Day 1 -1830 PSS Optical Transponder Overview
• Client signals of various types enter the OT in a client port.
• Client signal may be multiplexed with other client signals (Mux OT
only)
• Signal may be tagged with VLAN tags or other Ethernet parameters
(Ethernet OT only)
• Signal is encoded with Forward Error Correction (FEC)
• Signal is mapped into an optical carrier frame (usually OTN)
• Signal power can be amplified or attenuated.
• Signal is tuned to a specific DWDM optical channel.
• Signal is encoded with WaveTracker keys.
• Signal exits the OT through one or more Line ports.

Optical Transponders

Transponders share many common features:

 Line-side ITU-T G.709 OTUx standards-compliant digital wrapper

 Tunable line wavelength. Each transponder is able to tune to any of the 44/88
wavelengths that Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS-32 supports. This drastically improves operations and
inventory.
 On-board variable optical attenuator to control optical line transmit power and
allow automatic channel power balancing.
 Wavelength Tracker encoder. Adds a unique WaveKey to the line transmit
wavelength for network-wide monitoring.
 Optical 1+1 protection for services requiring high availability.
 Pluggable client optics. All client ports use SFPs, XFPs or CFPs (pluggables) for maximum flexibility
of service and reach, and for lowest cost.
 Facility and terminal loopbacks, provisionable error handling, client side digital
performance monitoring.
 Performance monitoring available on all optical ports.
 LC connectors are used on all optical connections in the Alcatel-Lucent 1830
PSS-32, for low cost and high density.

FEC naming

Standard name Description Coding Comment

gain
SD FEC ALU Proprietary soft-decision FEC encoding with 11.2 dB
improved Coding gain as compared to AFEC.
Additionally SDFEC reduces penalties associated with
cycle-slip mitigation.
AFEC ALU proprietary FEC encoding. This terminology is 9.2 dB
used for signals that are 40G and higher (OTU-3 and
OTU-4). AFEC is designed as a BCH (1020, 988)
code, and is compliant with Appendix I.9 of ITU-T
G.975.1. of AFEC.
EFEC2 (S-EFEC in EPT) ALU proprietary FEC encoding. This terminology is 9.2 dB Higher latency than
used for signals that are 10G (OTU-2). EFEC2 is a EFEC
BCH (1020, 988) code, which is compliant with
Appendix I.9 of ITU-T G.975.1. In reality, AFEC is
equivalent to EFEC2.
EFEC (A-EFEC in EPT) AMCC proprietary FEC. It’s not as good as EFEC2. 8.6dB
EFEC is compliant with Appendix I.4 of ITU-T
G.975.1.
UFEC an older proprietary Lucent code. UFEC is an >8 dB
example of a low-density parity check (LDPC) code,
and is described in Appendix I.6 of ITU-T G.975.1.
RSFEC (GFEC in EPT) standard Reed-Solomon G.709 6.2 dB

New Parameters for 112SCX10 OT and the 112SCA1 OT

 Compensated Chromatic Dispersion

 received (CDR) parameter is the amount of compensated chromatic dispersion at the line side optical receiver
 This measured value is reported through CLI/SNMP, while CDR average is stored as CDRAVG (CDR average)
measurement value. PM uses the measured value of CDR to calculate average compensated chromatic dispersion in
the accumulation period.
 The system provides CDRL (CDR Low tide mark) and CDRH (CDR High tide mark) measured value for each
measurement interval when PM is enabled.
 In this release, the module supports up to 30,000 ps/nm CD

 Compensated Differential Group delay

 received (DGDR) parameter is the amount of compensated differential group delay at the line side optical receiver
 This measured value is reported through CLI/SNMP, while DGDR average is stored as DGDRAVG (DGDR average)
measurement value. PM uses the measured value of DGDR to calculate average compensated differential group delay
in the accumulation period.
 The system provides DGDRL (DGDR Low tide mark) and DGDRH (DGDR High tide mark) measured value for each
measurement interval when PM is enabled.
 In this release, the module supports up to 90 ps DGD.

 Frequency Offset
 received (FOFFR) parameter is a measure of the optical frequency difference between the local oscillator and the
incoming signal at the line side optical receiver
 This measured value is reported through CLI/SNMP, while FOFFR average is stored as FOFFRRAVG (FOFFR average)
measurement value. PM uses the measured value of FOFFR to calculate the average amount of frequency offset in
the accumulation period.
 The system provides FOFFRL (FOFFR Low tide mark) and FOFFRH (FOFFR High tide mark) measured value for each
measurement interval when PM is enabled.

130SCX10 -130G Single Port Tunable Coherent Mux Transponder – 10
Clients

 Overview
The 130SCX10 is a second generation 10x10G MUX optical transponder, which supports
multiplexing of up to ten 10G client signals into one single OTU4 line interface. The 130SCX10
card features Soft-Decision Forward Error Correction (SD-FEC) as a user provisionable option.
SD-FEC provides more net coding gain (10.5 dB) than previous generation FEC offered on first
generation 100G cards, which used AFEC. Although the pack is known as a “100G” pack, the
actual line rate is either 130 Gb/s (with SD-FEC) or 112 Gb/s (with AFEC).

 Physical design
The 130SCX10 OT is a two-slot-wide full-height pack. The 130SCX10 supports one bi-
directional optical line interface port (L1). The line port uses fixed, non-pluggable optics and
an LC connector. It also supports ten client interfaces with XFP modules (B&W, CWDM). The
130SCX10 card contains two LEDs, a card status LED and the line interface LED. Each client
port has a dedicated port status LED and an Ethernet LED. The Ethernet LEDs are not utilized
on this card.

MVAC Module

 A unidirectional pack with 8 ports for adding and dropping alien wavelengths
 The MVAC is implemented as a half-height module that can be configured in any
of the universal slots in the 1830 PSS-32
 The following are the basic functions provided by SVAC as demarcation and
adaptation for so-called “alien” (foreign wavelength) channel.
 Encodes the Wavelength Tracker wave keys onto the optical channel.
 Automatically adjusts a variable optical attenuator (VOA) on each channel to set the
channel output optical power to the target level determined by NE SW
 Monitors incoming alien wavelength optical power level and appropriate
alarming.
 MVAC is colorless and connects into an SFD or directly to a colorless port on the
CWR8/CWR8-88.

OPS Protection

The OPS (Optical Physical Section) Protection is a 1+1 (Per-channel optical line
protection) option that protects the optical line only.
The OPS (Optical Protection Switch) Card and Optical Transponders are used for
channel protection (OCHP).
The OT signal is bridged over two different lines (working and protecting line). In this
way the signal is delivered towards two different paths. At the receiver side the selection
between the two diversely routed signals is performed. The protection switching is
triggered by loss of optical power.

OPS Protection

Line Side OPS Protection

Client Side OPS Protection

OMSP Protection

Optical Multiplex Section Protection (OMSP) provides 1+1 protection for WDM lines and their
related amplifiers . OMSP completely protects the transmission line with the exception of
transponders and SFDs.
The OPSA card is used for 1+1 OMSP.
In the transmit direction, the SFD/ITLB total output channels are split into two separate optical
multiplex sections routed to two different DWDM lines. In the receive direction, the OPSA
selector picks one of the two lines as the active path based on power monitoring or user
manual selection. Automatic protection switching is based on LOS detection on OPSA A/B
port.

Y-Cable Protection (O-SNCP)

The O-SNCP (Optical Sub-Network Connection Protection) is a 1+1 option that protects both the optical
line and the transponders which may be deployed in ring, point to point or mesh topologies.
Y-cable protection is a network protection mechanism which protects the transponder card, client side
laser, network side laser, and network side fibers (assuming diverse fiber routes).

Y-Cable Installation & Connection

Y-cable pack installation and connection:

 Both the working and protection OT cards must be installed in the same 1830 PSS
shelf to allow the necessary backplane communication between the paired Y-cable
cards.
 Within each shelf, there are specific pairs of slot locations which support this
backplane communication between the cards.
 Each Y-cable must connect corresponding client ports on the working and protection
OT cards. For example, working port C1 must be connected to protection port C1, or
C2 to C2, etc.
 For half height OTs, the 2 OTs must be positioned in vertically adjacent slots.
 For full height, 1-slot wide OTs on a PSS-32 and PSS-16 shelf, the 2 OTs must be
positioned in horizontally adjacent slots.

All Rights Reserved © Alcatel-Lucent 2012

E-SNCP Protection

E-SNCP (Electrical sub-block network connection protection) is a network

side protection mechanism which protects against network side module
related failure, and line signal failure caused by network fiber interruption or
intermediate node malfunctions.
E-SNCP protection is implemented by permanent head-end bridging and
dynamic tail-end switching. The automatic switch decision is made based on
Loss of Optical signal/Loss of lock, or by default monitoring detected by the
OTN mapper.
For this type of protection, the client signal connects to one client port on the
OT. The client port is then split and transmitted in both the East and West
directions.

Software Loopbacks

Loopbacks

The two basic types of loopbacks are:

􀂃 Line (Facility) loopbacks - The received optical external transmission signal
on the target facility is capable of being looped from the port function input
back toward the port function output. It is permissible to loopback the
electrical signal of the optical interfaces as opposed to the optical signal.
Each interface of a multiple interface port function is capable of being
looped back independently
􀂃 Terminal loopbacks - The electrical transmission signal on an optical
interface port function is capable of being looped from the port function
output back toward the port function input. Port functions include optical
interfaces at various rates. The placement of the terminal loopback on any
particular port function is a compromise between having the loopback be as
close as possible to the physical interface and having the terminal loopback
support transparent data flow

FOADM Topology
 FOADM must be manually managed/configured – power levels are not
automatically adjusted.
 FOADM End Terminals can be auto power managed
 2 Degree + FOADM must be manually power managed

FOADM Configurations:
 FOADM line terminal
 FOADM hub
 Multi-degree FOADM (2 degree, 3 degree)
 Static Filters (SFD-5, SFD-8, SFD-44/44B, SFD-40/40B, SFC-2/4/8)

All Rights Reserved © Alcatel-Lucent 2012

FOADM Architecture Examples
2 Degree FOADM
 Configuration faces both east and west directions. Traffic from the optical lines can be
added or dropped, and at least one single wavelength passes through transparently.

FOADM Hub
 A FOADM hub is a configuration of two lines in a ring where OTs terminate all
wavelengths. No channels cross transparently between these two lines.

All Rights Reserved © Alcatel-Lucent 2012

SFD Cascading 3 Degree FOADM

FOADM 5-channel static-filter architecture (2-

degree)
 Expansion ports can be used to cascade up to 3
filters in any combination, allowing for a maximum
of 15 individually muxed/de-muxed channels.
 All other channels are band passed through.

3-degree FOADM
 Configuration is a mesh node
with three valid DWDM line
terminals.
 Individual channels enter from
one line and can be added or
dropped, or passed through.

All Rights Reserved © Alcatel-Lucent 2012

TOADM Topology
Tunable Optical Add Drop Mux (TOADM)
 Networks designed such that any wavelength can be added or dropped at any site,
and the network can also be reconfigured in-service to alter the wavelength
routings.

TOADM Configurations:
 TOADM rings
 TOADM linear networks
 Multi-degree TOADMs (1 degree to 8 degree, SFD-44/44B, 40/40B Filters)

TOADM Ring Topology:

 A TOADM ring consists of two-degree TOADM NEs and possibly in-line amplifiers.
 In order to support any-to-any connectivity in the ring, the through path around the
ring is automatically balanced during network commissioning. The automatic
balancing adjusts amplifier gains around the ring through-path to ensure all channels
leaving a given node do so at the designed power level.
 After the ring has been commissioned, automatic power management adapts to
changes in the network to keep a given channel within provisioned ranges in small
variations of 1 – 2 dB. Larger gain variations require end user intervention.

Benefits of FlexGrid

FlexGrid offers the following benefits:

1. Higher channel count within the same amplifier BW window
2. Spectral efficiency tradeoff for reach vs capacity
3. Grouping of multiple carriers within a larger channel for easier management
4. Allows support for higher baud-rate transmission (e.g. 43Gbauds)

 Improves flexibility while increasing capacity of the photonics line.

Pre- and post-provisioning

Two basic methods for provisioning the network element:

 Post-provisioning
 Hardware components are inserted into the shelf and then provisioned.
 Any card attributes that are not pre-provisioned assume default values when the card is
inserted in the shelf
 Only those attributes requiring non-default values need be provisioned.
 Pre-provisioning
 Requires that the network element be equipped with a control card only.
 Can provision slots/cards/interfaces that are not physically present.
 Can use all of the provisioning commands to pre-provision a network element, including those
used for service provisioning.
 Cards inserted into a pre-provisioned shelf must match the provisioned topology. If they do
not, a mismatch alarm is raised.

Post-provisioning – things to know

Things to know:
 Upon insertion, card state is automatically set to state up
 All ports on through path cards are:
 Assigned;
 Set to state up; and
– This includes LD modules, CWR8-88
– This does not include OT’s transponder cards

 For transponders:
 Ports must be individually assigned; and
 Port states must be set appropriately
– If the 1354 RM-PhM physical topology UI is used to create the physical topology
connections, the 1354 RM-PhM will automate the network port assignment and state
change
– If the 1354 RM-PhM service creation UI is used to create services, the 1354 RM-PhM
will automate the client port assignment and state change

Pre-provisioning and AINS

When pre-provisioning, you can specify that cards and ports use automatic in
service (AINS).
If AINS is enabled, all alarms are suppressed for the entity while it is not
physically present in the shelf.
When the card is inserted in the shelf, the card and the ports on the card that
are configured AINS are automatically set admin up.
 For cards, AINS is automatically removed when the pre-configured card type is
inserted in the shelf.
 For ports, AINS remains in effect while there are alarms on the port, and for a
configurable period of time (AINS timer) after the port is alarm free. Once the port
has been alarm-free for the duration of the AINS timer, the state will automatically
transition to a state of “In Service” and all future alarms will be reported.

Slot Provisioning

 Each slot on the shelf is configured for the card type that is, or will be, inserted into the slot.
 Inserting a card into a slot automatically provisions the slot for the card.
 If the slot has been pre-provisioned to accept a different card type, a card mismatch alarm is raised
when the card is inserted.
 If a card is permanently removed from a slot, the user should set the slot out of service and provision
the slot type to “empty” to avoid future mismatch alarms.

Configurations
Empty The default. Inserting a card into an empty slot automatically provisions the slot for the inserted card type.

Provisioned Used for pre-provisioning to specify that a specific card type is expected to be inserted into the slot.

Present Used to identify the card type that is actually inserted in the slot.

States
Administrative state Specifies whether the card in the slot is programmed up (in service) or down (out of service).

Operational state Specifies if the card in the slot is physically able to provide service. The operational state is up if the card is
inserted in the slot and is fault-free. Otherwise, the status is down.

Card Configuration: Common attributes

All cards share the following common attributes:

 Card name.
 Default: Card-<shelf>-<slot>
 Card description.
 Default: Blank
 High temperature threshold. Specifies the
temperature above which the high
temperature alarm is triggered.
 Default: 90°C
 Low temperature threshold. Specifies the
temperature below which the low temperature
alarm is triggered.
 Default: -5°C
 Temperature threshold tolerance. Defines the
change in temperature that must be exceeded
before the alarm is cleared.
 Default: 3°C

Physical Topology

Defines how the card interfaces are

connected using optical fibers.
 connected to another interface (shelf,
slot, and port) on the network element
 connected to an external interface,
either within or outside the 1830
network
 unconnected
Topology connections are required to be
provisioned before a service can be created.
Once the topology is defined, a service can
be provisioned by:
 specifying only the service endpoints on
each NE through which the service passes
(NE interfaces)
 specifying only the network service
endpoints (1354 PhM)

Physical Topology Creation

 Created automatically during Network

Commissioning using data from the EPT for the
through path
 Can be created manually using the 1354 PhM,
WebUI, TL1, or CLI
 Network ports automatically tuned to the
SFD44 channel port to which they are
connected.
 NE automatically configures external
connections to another NE in the network on
system turn up (requires OSC connectivity)

Transponder Port Configuration

Transponder interfaces provide OEO conversion of

the client signals. Configure the interfaces for (not
all attributes apply to all transponder interfaces):
 Programmed channel (ITU channel #)
 Administrative state
 Up/Down/Maintenance (note that states are
automatically set during service creation)
 Configure Line or Client loopbacks
 Forward Error Correction (FEC) mode
 How client port responds to upstream
event
 Auto Laser Off
 Auto Laser On (Inject AIS) or (idle frames)

Configuring the Channel Wavelength of the Interface

You need to configure the band and channel of the wavelength being carried over the
network port.
 Tunable transponders
 Physical topology provisioning by 1354 PhM will automatically tune laser to match the
SFD44/44B
 One case when it will not is the 1830 Dangling OT configuration
– Manually tune the 1830 OT to the desired itu
– Then use the physical topology to connect the transponder and the CMD42

Port State Hierarchy

 Some attribute changes require the user to put the port into maintenance state
 Some attribute changes are service affecting (i.e. auto-negotiation, port directionality,
FEC mode)
 This is to prevent the user from accidentally causes a service affecting event
 Changing the port state from UP to Maintenance will not cause an outage
 Rules
 The network port of a transponder card can never have a lower port state than a client
port
 Once a port is State UP, it cannot be put directly into UP AINS.
– It must first transition through Maintenance

 Example
 To change the FEC mode on a 11STAR1 from EFEC to GFEC
– Put all client ports into Maintenance state
– Put network port into Maintenance State
– Change FEC mode (service affecting event)
– Put network port State UP or State UP AINS
– Put all client ports State UP or State UP AINS

Transponder AINS

Termination point AINS

 A typical use of termination point AINS is to enforce suppression of network
transponder port facility alarms until all facility problems have cleared for the Och
trail terminating on that port. This eliminates nuisance alarms when the Och trail is
initially created.
Client port AINS
 Client port AINS is useful in preventing facility alarms until the facility problems have
cleared (and stayed clear) for the AINS timer duration. Client port AINS is bi-
directional. USALS, US_FLT, RFI, and FLT conditions must be cleared in addition to all
facility receive conditions.

Configuring the LOS propagation interface attribute

The loss of signal propagation (LOSPROP) capability determines how a client

transponder reacts to an upstream client or network failure condition.
LOSPROP is configured per client port. A card with multiple client ports can
have LOSPROP configured differently from client port to client port.
 Turn Laser On - Inject AIS-L - Insert AIS-L on the signal and propagate
(SONET/SDH ports only).
 Turn Laser On - Inject Idle Frames - Inject idle frames into the signal and
propagate (Ethernet ports only).
 Turn Laser Off - Shutoff the client laser.

LOSPROP scenarios

Client-facing Rx failure with LOSPROP configured to LaserOff

1. LOS detected at far-end (FE) client port. LOS alarm raised.
2. LOS code sent from the FE network port using DW overhead
3. LOS code detected at near-end network port.
4. Near-end client laser turned off. Upstream auto laser shutoff
(UPSM-ALS) condition raised on client port.

Client-facing Rx failure with LOSPROP configured to LaserOn

1. LOS detected at client port. LOS alarm raised.
2. LOS code sent from the network port using DW overhead bytes.
3. LOS code detected at the network port.
4. AIS-L inserted towards the client. UPSM-AISL condition raised on
client port.

Network Rx failure
1. Unidirectional network LOS, LOF, or LOC failure occurs.
2. LOS, LOF, or LOC failure detected at downstream network port
(depending on the ASE level). LOS, LOF, or LOC alarm raised.
3. Client ports configured as Laseroff: UPSM-ALS condition raised and
port lasers shut off. Client ports configured as InsertAISL: UPSM-
AISL condition raised and AIS-L inserted towards the clients.
Note   For a bi-directional failure, items 2 and 3 also occur at the A-end.
