What is electricity?
You may associate the word electricity to devices such as lights, television, mobile
phone, or computer. Indeed, electricity powers on these devices.
What is Electricity?
Electricity is a type of energy used to power machines and electrical devices. It is due to
the presence of electrical charges.
When the charges are not moving, it is called static electricity. When the charges are
moving, it is called current electricity or electric current.
An electric circuit is like a pathway where charges can flow continuously. This means
that the charges move from its source to a device and then back to it source again.
Static Electricity
Static electricity is the type of electricity where there is an accumulation of imbalanced electrical
charges on the surface of a material, usually on an insulator. There is no current flowing through the
material.
You often experience static electricity when materials are rubbed together like that when you use a
plastic comb in combing your hair and the comb attracts bits of paper. Lightning is caused by static
electricity.
Current Electricity
Current electricity is the type of electricity that where the electrons flow through a conductor. The
movement of electrons is from the negative end to the positive end. Since the electrons are negatively
charged, the current flows from the negative to the positive point within an electrical circuit.
It is involved in powering most of the devices that you use such as your gadgets, your appliances at
home, and even automobiles.
Current electricity can be generated from different sources.
The combustion of fossil fuels is the most common source
of electrical energy. Electricity can also be generated from
hydropower plants where potential water resources are
used to generate power; geothermal power plants which
use the internal heat of the Earth; wind turbines which use
air to generate current; and solar panels which capture
solar energy to generate electricity.
Safety Measures when Dealing with Electricity
Electricity can be dangerous. Here are important things to remember when dealing with
electrical plugs and cords:
1. Do not play with the wall outlet. Do not insert anything to it except for the proper plug.
2. Hold the plug when unplugging something from the wall, do not pull the cord.
What are these clothes and tools made of? How do they protect the
electrician from being electrocuted?
What term refers to the bright flash of electricity produced by a thunderstorm?
