WHAT IS A
TRANSPLANTER
 A rice transplanter is a specialized transplanter fitted to
transplant rice seedlings onto paddy field.
 A common rice transplanter comprises:
 a seedling tray like a shed roof on which mat type rice
nursery is set;
 a seedling tray shifter that shifts the seedling tray like a
carriage of typewriters; and
 plural pickup forks that pick up a seedling from mat type
nursery on the seedling tray and put the seedling into the
earth, as if the seedling were taken between human fingers.
HISTORY
 Rice transplanters were first developed
in Japan.
 In 1898 the first rice transplanter patent
was granted to a farmer, Heigoro Kono,
Miyazaki, Japan.
 Benzo Watanabe of Okayama City invented
the first example in 1933, which looks like a
wooden desk on wheels
 In 1965, the first commercially sold rice
planter was developed . it was a single row
planter that was 7 to 8 times slower
than hand planting
 In 1986, Ikuo Yamakage of the National Institute of
Agricultural Machinery developed a system that used
revolving offset gears.
 This technology made it possible to control the angles of the
planting hooks and it allowed for smoother, faster movement.
This innovation allowed the transplanter to be mounted onto
riding machinery
TYPE OF RICE TRANSPLANTERE
On the basis of prime mover requirements
 Manuel transplanter
 Self propelled transplanter- walking &riding
 Animal drawn transplanter
 Tractor mounted transplanter

WORKING PRINCIPLE
 Paddy seedlings are kept in the tray and allowed to flow
down under gravity
 The fork attached to shaft picks up the seedlings from the
tray and keeps in horizontal position on the skid
 The motion for the shaft is given by using chain and sprocket
arrangement
Advantages
 Timeliness of operation
 Less transplanting shock
 Uniform maturity of crops
 Less time required than hand transplanting
 Low labor requirement
 Easy to operate
 Require less energy
 Yield is higher than hand transplanting
 Reduce burden of peak time labor requirement
 Facilitate to increase cropping intensity
 Reduce drudgery of labor
Problems faced by
farmers
 Lack of knowledge on the use of transplanter
 Not aware of the benefits of transplanter
 Lack of skilled operator
 Initial cost of transplanter is very high
 Training is needed to raise seedlings
 Seedling tray is not available in local market
 Lack of farm road to access the transplanter in the field
 Land is needed to be prepared specially for transplanting
 Irregular shape of land
 Good nursery management practices are required
