A. Definition
of Meaning

The word ‘meaning’ is used to refer to such different things as the

idea or intention lying behind a piece of language, as in (1), the
thing referred to by a piece of language (2), and the translations of
words between languages (3).
B. Types of
Meaning
1. Literal Meaning
Literal meaning of a sentence is based on just the semantic innformation that you have from your knowledge of
English.
E.g : - The salt is salty
From example number 1 the writer will immediately understand that the speaker says that the salt is salty.
From this example there is no need to search for the fact that the taste of salt is salty.

2. Figurative Meaning
Figurative language is a language that uses words or expressions with different meanings from literal
interpretations, when the writer uses literal language. Along with the times, as now, the language has also
experienced growth in its use, if we know that the language
style is only used in making poetry, short stories or poetry, but now the style is widely used in making news or
articles in newspapers.
E.g : You are my sunshine
It mean you are the light of my life, you are dear to me, you are important and special.

C. Types of
Meaning
according Leech
1. Conceptual or Denotative Meaning
Conceptual meaning is also called logical or cognitive meaning. It is the basic propositional meaning which
corresponds to the primary dictionary definition. It is the essential or core meaning.
The concept is minimal unit of meaning which could be called 'sememe'.
E.g. similarly, we can define sememe 'Woman' as = + human + female + adult.

2. Connotative Meaning
Connotative meaning is the communicative value of an expression according to what is referred to. The word
'woman' in its conceptual meaning only means: human, female, and adult. But in the connotative meaning there
are additional traits that are referred to physical, psychological, or social, for example the connotation of weak
psychic nature, easy to cry, cowardly, etc. which is attached to the word 'woman'.
Social Meaning .3
Social meaning is the meaning of a word that indicates the user's social environment. The existence of several
utterances or words as dialects, shows the origin of speakers according to geographical or social environment.
Stylistic variation represents the social variation. Style helps us to know about the period, field and status of the
discourse. For example, 'steed ', 'horse and 'nag' are synonymous. They all mean a kind of animal i.e. Horse.
But they differ in style and so have various social meaning. 'Steed' is used in poetry; 'horse' is used in
.general, while 'nag' is slang

Affective or Emotive Meaning .4

Affective meaning, is the meaning that reflects the personal feelings of the speaker, including his attitude towards
.the listener,or his attitude towards something he said
."E.g. "I hate you, you idiot
Here speaker seems to have a very negative attitude towards his listener. This is called affective meaning. But very
.often we are more discreet (cautious) and convey our attitude indirectly
.“E.g. "I am terribly sorry but if you would be so kind as to lower your voice a little
The sentence conveys our irritation in a scaled down manner for the sake of politeness. Intonation and voice
quality are also important here. Thus, the sentence above can be uttered in biting sarcasm and the impression of
.politeness maybe reversed while
5. Reflective Meaning
Reflected meaning arises when a word has more than one conceptual meaning or multiple conceptual meaning.
Reflected meaning is divided into two types namely pictorial meaning and gereplective meaning.
E.g. "Grandfather always reminded not to play in the forest at night, because the king of the forest is always looking
for prey.“
King of the forest here means tiger.
While the meaning of reflection related to etiquette is called the pictorial meaning.
E.g. "Her mother has passed away."
Passed away here means died.

6. Collocative Meaning
Collocative meaning is the meaning which a word acquires in the company of certain words. Words collocate or co
occur with certain words only. Collocative meaning refers to associations of a word because of its usual or habitual
co-occurrence with certain types of words.
E.g. 'Pretty' and 'handsome' indicate 'good looking'.
The word 'pretty' collocates with - girls, woman, village, gardens, flowers, etc. On the other hand. the word
'handsome' collocates with - 'boys' men, etc. so 'pretty woman' and 'handsome man'.
The verbs 'wander' and 'stroll' have almost the same meaning but while 'cows may wander into another farm', they
don't stroll into that farm because 'stroll' collocates with human subject only.
7. Thematic Meaning
Thematic meaning is the meaning that is communicated according to the way the speaker or writer
organizes his message, in the sense of sequence, focus and emphasis. Thus, active is different from
passive though its conceptual meaning is the same. The ways we order our message also convey what is
important and what not. This is basically thematic meaning.
E.g.
1."Mrs. Smith donated the first prize"
2. "The first prize was donated by Mrs. Smith“

In the first sentence “who gave away the prize“ is more important, but in the second sentence “what did
Mrs. Smith gave is important”. So, the change of focus changes the meaning also.
