CLUTCH

DEFINITION:
THE CLUTCH IS THE MECHA NICA L
DEVICE WHICH TRANSFERS THE
R O TAT I O N A L P O W E R F R O M T H E
ENGINE TO THE WHEELS IN ANY
MANUAL VEHICLE
MULTIPLATE CLUTCH
In 2 wheeler vehicles like bikes and scooters
there is a problem of packaging due to their
small size
So to fulfil the need of required torque
output, instead of a large single plate clutch
, A multi-plate clutch having small clutch
plates is used to transmit power between
engine shaft and the transmission shaft.
When we go to the terrain having different
ups and downs or different road challenges,
A multi-plate clutch is required to maintain
the smooth and steady engagement
between the engine and the transmission
shaft which in turn continuously provides
required amount of torque and speed to the
vehicle.
TYPES OF MULTIPLATE PLATE

Diaphragm Type Multi-Plate Clutch

During engagement finger like fins of the diaphragm spring remains in

the inflated shape which in turn applies pressure over the pressure
plate and maintain the friction contact between the pressure plate,
clutch plates, and flywheel respectively.

Hydraulic Operated or Automatic Clutch

In this type of clutcH the engagement and disengagement of the
clutch is controlled by the hydraulic device (eg- torque converter)
controlled with the accelerator pedal and is coupled with the
diaphragm type multi-plate clutch.

WORKING OF MULTIPLE CLUTCH
A multi-plate clutch system consists of the separator plates,
pressure plates, diaphragm spring, flywheel, input shaft,
etc. A separator plate is often known as the clutch discs
1.The input shaft is connected to the flywheel and the engine.
2.That means in whatever direction the input shaft is rotating
the flywheel also starts rotating in the same direction
3.The flywheel has teeths across its periphery the two pressure
plates are separated by a separator plate made up of iron
4.So when we press the clutch the spring gives pressure to the
pressure plate these pressure plate apply pressure to
separator and the clutch plates
5..Due to this pressure, the clutch plate at the other end comes
in contact with the flywheel and thus this pressure plate
engages with the flywheel. So, the vehicle starts to
accelerate.
6.When the clutch pedal is in the rest position, the clutch plate
is always engaged with the flywheel.
7.The clutch gets released or disengaged when the clutch
pedal is
pressed. This causes the clutch pressure plate to be moved
away
from the drive and driven plates, overcoming the clutch spring
force.
8. This movement of the pressure plate, relieves the spring
pressure
holding the drive and driven plates together. Then the plates
float
away from each other and slip axially.
9.Thus, the clutch shaft speed reduces slowly. Finally, the
clutch
shaft stops rotating. Power is no longer transferred into the
PROPERTIES OF MULTIPLATE CLUTCH
1.The multiplate clutch consist of more than one clutch plate
2.The torque transmitting capacity of multiplate clutch is lower
than single plate clutch
3.Heat generation is more due to more frictional surface hence
it needs cooling medium and referred to as 'wet type
clutch's.
4.The coefficient of friction is low..
5.Clutch engagement is non instantaneous.
multiple disc clutch is used where compact construction is
desirable.
