WHAT IS THE OORT CLOUD??
 The Oort Cloud – is an extended shell
of icy objects that exist in the
outermost reaches of the solar system.
WHO IS IT NAMED AFTER?
• Jan Oort is
a Dutch Astronomer
who first theorized
it’s existence.
WHERE IS IT LOCATED?
• The Oort Cloud is located 15 trillion
kilometers from the sun.

• Comets usually stay in the Oort Cloud

or Kuiper Belt.
KUIPER BELT

 A disc-shaped region beyond Neptune

that extends from about 30 to 55
astronomical units.

 The Kuiper belt, occasionally called the

Edgeworth–Kuiper belt, is a circumstellar
disc in the outer Solar System, extending
from the orbit of Neptune to
approximately 50 AU from the Sun.
FUN FACTS
 The Oort Cloud is a reserve cometary nuclei that
contain ices dating back to the origin of the solar
system.

 Objects in the Oort Cloud are also referred to as

Trans-Neptunian objects. This name also applies
to objects in the Kuiper Belt

 No one knows for sure how many objects exist in

the Oort Cloud, but most estimate that its at
around 2 trillion.
