Grade 8 - SEA Project on ‘Population Pyramid’
Definition: Population Pyramid
A population pyramid (also called an age structure diagram), is a graphical illustration that shows the
distribution of various age groups in a population (typically that of a country or region of the world), which
forms the shape of a pyramid when the population is growing.
Terminology
 Birth Rate: The number of births, per year, per 1000 people in the population
 Death Rate: The number of deaths, per year, per 1000 people
in the population.
 Life Expectancy: Average number of years a person
at birth can expect to live.
 Declining: To become smaller, weaker, or less important.
 Middle Age: Subjectively – 40 ~ 64 years old.
 Older Age: Subjectively – 65 + years old.
 Concave: Curving inwards.
 Convex: Curving outwards.
 Dependency Ratio: The ratio between those in the non-economically active age group (taken to be
children under 15 and adults over 65) and those in the economically active age group (15 to 64).
Stages of Population Pyramid
Make a project of A4 size with the following details.
You will use data from the following website to analyze population trends:
https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/
 Select any two countries from different continents of the world to analyze.
• When you first arrive at the website, go to the Guide to Country Comparisons link.
• You should be taken to a new page where you can see tabs. Select your country of choice in the given space.
After selecting your country go to the “people and society” tab. Then page down until you see the population
pyramid.
• Try to select the countries that are different from each other. (There may not be a huge difference, but you
should be able to find two pyramids that show some variations from each other.)
ANALYSIS QUESTIONS:
1) For each pyramid, what does the shape most closely resemble (e.g., a classic “pyramid” or “Christmas tree”,
a barrel, a rectangle, an inverted “Christmas tree”)?
2) What does the shape of a pyramid indicate about its patterns of fertility and mortality?
3) What are the differences between the two pyramids that you have selected? Please discuss each country
under a different heading (example- a) UK, Europe, b) Indonesia, Southeast Asia) and be sure to comment on
age/gender differences, birth rate, death rate, life expectancy, infant mortality rate etc.
4) What do you think accounts for the different pyramids from these regions? In other words, why are there
such differences between the population pyramids of these two countries? Again, please discuss each country
under a different heading.
5) Compare both countries’ population pyramids with the population pyramid of India (given in your
Geography Text Book page no. 73 fig. 6.8) and write any three observations based on your comparison.
