THE MIDWIFE

What is a midwife? A midwife is a person who has accomplished a

regular midwifery program. She has certain qualifications required in
midwifery, and legally has a license to practice midwifery. She may
practice in hospitals, clinics, health units, domiciliary conditions or in
any other service. She is able to work as an independent practitioner,
or to function in a multi-professional team.
The midwife gives the supervision, care, and advice to women. Her
duty is not only to help women give birth to babies, but it also extends
to the period of pregnancy and postpartum. They are to diagnose
pregnancy, to undertake examinations of the woman and her baby, to
assess their condition to detect if there is an abnormality in mother or
child, to plan care, to implement the care plan. She has to care both
the mother and the newborn. The responsibility of a midwife continues
as she evaluates the effectiveness of the plan and its implementation.
