A research study on Women and Their Partners; Perceptions of the Key Roles of the Labor and
Delivery Nurse, identified key roles of nurses during labor and delivery.
This descriptive qualitative study examined the perspectives of women and their partners
regarding the key roles of the labor and delivery nurse during labor and birth. Ten couples were
interviewed separately. The data analysis, conducted through four key roles of the labor and delivery
nurse: support person, educator, patient advocate, and provider of continuity of care. Nurses
provided both physical and emotional support.

1. Provide examples or scenario wherein a nurse can assume the four key roles of nurses during
labor and delivery.
As a profession, nursing is regarded as one of the highest in our nation. The primary duty of a nurse is to
care for and guarantee the patient's safety and well-being. They represent the friendly atmosphere of
the facility. One of the most joyful and difficult times in a mother's life is when she gives birth to her first
child. Studies with women and their partners served as the basis for the vital duties of the labor and
delivery nurse. There are four main obligations to be aware of. The first support person a lady in labor
can have by her side is a nurse who is available round-the-clock to check on the mother and keep track
of her vital signs. Given that your child has complete faith in you, you could be described as her "support
person" because you will always be there for her no matter what occurs.
Nurses are available to console a pregnant or laboring woman who may appear scared or have
emotional outbursts. Another educator duty that a nurse must perform is educating the pregnant
woman during her prenatal visits and even before she goes into labor and delivers birth. The nurse must
instruct the woman and her partner on how to raise their child once the baby is delivered. A nurse must
explain what will happen to a pregnant woman who is a first-time mother. A nurse must advise a
pregnant lady on what foods and beverages she should and shouldn't avoid protecting the health of her
unborn child. A nurse is a true patient advocate since she exclusively has her patients' best interests in
mind. Nursing advocates are dedicated to upholding patient equality, preserving human dignity, and
minimizing suffering. Patients ought to have the freedom to select their healthcare providers. Since they
follow up with patients after the doctor or midwife to assist with immunizations, newborn care, nursing,
and even postpartum, nurses provide continuity of care.

2. What do you think is the most important role of a nurse to a mother experiencing labor? Explain
your answer.
The hardest and most difficult time for a woman to go through is labor. She might be sensitive or might
injure you if she can't even control her emotions. The mother's support, comfort, and possibly the
provision of something to ease her discomfort are the nurse's most crucial responsibilities throughout
labor. Monitoring her vital signs is also crucial since it allows us to determine whether or not the mother
is acting normally. To help women cope with discomfort and ensure they have all they need throughout
labor and delivery, a nurse may suggest relaxation techniques. Labor and delivery nurses assist families
during childbirth by working as a team with doctors, midwives, and other professionals. Nurses who
specialize in labor and delivery give women advice, practical clinical assistance, and information on both
easy and challenging pregnancies.
