One of the most wonderful things about being a nurse is the unique role we have with
our patients. Providing support is every nurse’s number one job. Sometimes the support is
medical, sometimes it’s emotional.  We play a critical role in the unforgettable experience of
bringing a new life into the world. It is very important that we have the skills and knowledge
in handling pregnant women to ensure that both mother and baby have a positive outcome.
Nurses/Midwives need to not only learn more about the specific cultures of their
patients; we must learn what our patients need, want, and expect on an individual basis. We
must be able to extend the same caring and empathy to all patients, no matter what the
circumstances are. Health teachings to ensure complete understanding of what is to be
expected during pregnancy, birth, labor, and the postpartum period.
We should prepare mothers for the challenge of labor and caring for newborns, time of
contractions, watch for complications and assist the doctor in dealing with problems as they
arise. Nurses/Midwives must be responsive to both the patient and the doctor while keeping
track of the unborn baby's welfare, and must be able to handle the unexpected, including
life-threatening emergencies such as pre-eclampsia, hemorrhage and preterm delivery. We,
in this health care facility, must learn how to work as a team to make sure we are doing
what is best for both the mother and the baby, thus preventing any complications.
Though stressful at times, being a nurse is indescribably special. The chance to help
someone bring another life into the world will leave you speechless time and time again. It is
a privilege and an honor for any person, especially one who is responsible for providing
medical attention and care.  As nurses, we must strive to protect this vulnerable and
beautiful time for every woman by honoring her personal wishes and providing her with the
highest quality care; thus preserving every woman’s dignity and even our own.
