1. EARTH MAT: Definition: a solid metallic plate or galvanised iron bars of different sizes are laid below ground
level. It is also called as grid earthing which are connected at every 2.5 meters interval both vertically and
horizontally. An earth mat is the interconnection of horizontal and vertical electrode. The vertical and horizontal
electrodes are for the dissipation of fault current into the ground.
After the construction of the earth mat, sand/good soil (without debris) are laid above the whole mat area. This
makes low resistive path for the surge voltages short circuit current which in turn prevents a person and electric
systems.

2. SUB SURFACE DRAINAGE SYSTEM
Drainage is the natural or artificial removal of a surface water and a sub-surface water from an area. The
internal drainage of most agricultural soils is good enough to prevent severe water logging, but many
soils need artificial drainage to improve production or to manage water supplies.
2a. GEOTEXTILES
New drainage systems incorporate geotextile filters that retain and prevent fine grains of soil from
passing into and clogging the drain. Geotextiles are synthetic textile fabrics specially manufactured for
civil and environmental engineering applications. Geo textiles are designed to retain fine soil particles
while allowing water it pass through. In a typical drainage system they would be laid along a trench which
would then be filled with coarse granular material: gravel, see shells, stone or rock. The geotextile is then
folded over the top of the stone and the trench is then covered by soil. Ground water seeps through the
geo textiles and flows through the stone to an out fell. In high ground water conditions perforated plastic
pipe is laid along the base of the drain to increase the volume of water transported in the drain.
The mixture of cement, fine aggregate and coarse aggregate is called PCC. It is
strong in compression and also it is used as damp proof course, it does not
possess any strength in tension.
1. It is used as a protective layer for the RCC above so that water from the RCC is not absorbed by the earth below.
2. Provides a base for the concrete and also helps workers to set out the structure above in an easier way.
4. Moisture available in soil should not be absorbed by RCC footings which causes erosion of reinforcement.
After the earth mat is laid and filled with crushed gravels then the polythene sheets are laid for the
required area.
