• In 2017, a total of 143.5 million metric tons (158.3 million short
tons) of cargo valued at US$15.2 billion (Cdn$19.8 billion) moved
through the Great Lakes- Seaway system.
• Economic Activity — The marine cargo and vessel activity in the
Great Lakes-Seaway system generated a total of US$35.0 billion
(Cdn$45.4 billion) in economic activity in the United States and
Canada &238,000 jobs in Canada and the U.S.
• St. Lawrence region is the industrial and agricultural heartland of
both the United States and Canada – with a combined GDP of more
than $6 trillion U.S. dollars. This output would represent the third-
largest economy in the world – behind the U.S. and China – if it were
a country.
