History of Bristol
 Bristol began life as a town called Brigg
stow, which means the meeting place at the
bridge in the old Saxon language. The
original town was listed in the Anglo-Saxon
Chronicle of 1051.
 The legend goes that America was actually
named after a Bristolian! Richard Amerike
was responsible for a large part of John
Cabot’s funding when he took his voyage to
America.
 The city played an important role in
England's maritime trade in tobacco, wine,
cotton and more.
 From the late 1600s to the early 1800s,
Bristol was involved in a massive slave
shipping industry.

 Bristol’s port was the second largest in
England after London as it was in such a
prime position. Bristol traded with many

Broad Street was the base for a network of
spies who operated out of the building on
behalf of the British government.

Attractions
 Civil architecture of most of Bristol died during German
air raids: Bristol Blitz
 In a night raid on 2 November 1940, 15,000 bombs were
dropped on the city. Ancient Church of the Knights
Templar was left in ruins as a reminder of the
devastation.
 Surviving buildings are remarkable Theatre Royal and
Cabot Tower, built in 1897 to commemorate the
American expedition quatercentenary famous sailor.
 University of Bristol was founded in 1909 based on the
university college.
 Colston School operates from 1708 and Bristol
Elementary School, Catholic school and school at the
Queen Elizabeth Hospital are counting their stories with
Tudor.

music scene.

1991 when Massive Attack released their
magnificent opus Blue Lines which included the
soaring "Unfinished Sympathy" and social critiques
such as "Safe From Harm" and "Daydreaming".

 At Bristol's core is the Floating
Harbour - a stretch of water that
snakes along the city-centre which
looks like a river in places but which is
actually a dock.
 For centuries the Floating Harbour was
where ships docked, bringing trade
and prosperity to the city. It was
created by diverting the River Avon in
the early 19th century to the New Cut
to the south, and by using various
locks to create a non-tidal dock.
 Today, the industrial shipping has
mostly gone and the Floating Harbour
is a home for leisure, pleasure craft,
upmarket waterfront apartments, and
the occasional visiting sailing ship.

 To the east of The Centre is the core
of historic Bristol - the Old City. Here
major streets include Queen Square,
King Street, Baldwin Street, and Corn
Street. It has wonderful Victorian and
Georgian buildings, historic and
charming pubs, and many places to
shop, drink and eat.
 To the north-east of the Old City is
Bristol's main shopping area -
Broadmead, centred on the
Broadmead itself and related streets
such as the Horsefair, Union Street
and Penn Street as well as The
Galleries shopping centre.
 At the east end of the Broadmead is
the major new shopping centre at
Cabot Circus and a related
development of more boutique shops The ferris wheel in Broadmead
at Quakers Friars.
The Yogscast
 Entertainment company based in Bristol that
primarily produce video gaming-related
videos on YouTube and Twitch.
 They began activity in 2008 and formally
incorporated as a company in 2011.
 They are also known for their annual
Christmas live streaming charity drive,
currently named the Yogscast Jingle Jam,
which has raised more than $17.7 million for
various charities as of January 2020.

countries, handling over 8.2 million passengers
