Bill Nye Video Questions

• Energy comes in all different forms: sound, ________________, falling

things have energy, when we move our muscles (that takes
energy), and _________________________.
• Energy can be converted (changed) from one ___________________
to another
• When energy is stored, we call it ___________________ energy (it has
the potential to do something)
• Energy makes things ______________________
• The bowling ball demonstration showed that kinetic energy will
never be _______________________ than the potential energy
Bill Nye Questions

• Name the different places that electricity comes from:

• Heat released from burning ___________________
• From the energy of falling ____________________
• __________________ Power comes from _______________________
• Energy in the _________________, which turns propellers
• The sun is beaming energy to the earth and solar panels
change ___________________ directly into electricity
• Electrical energy can be turned into ___________ energy,
heat energy, or _______________.
WEDNESDAY
Sources of Energy

• In the Bill Nye video, we learned that sources of energy include: burning coal,
falling water (hydropower), solar power, wind power, and Nuclear power
• However, given that this video is a bit outdated, Bill did not mention a few
additional sources which are listed below. Use this website to help you find the
definition for the words below (

Sources of Energy
• Natural gas -
• Petroleum -
• Biofuels -
• Geothermal -
Which energy source is best?

• Many alternative sources of energy are still being researched and tested.
Technologies are being developed and enhanced to improve energy sources.
Not all energies are ready for mass consumption, so you have to ask the right
questions to find out which energy source does the job.
Write down 3 questions you could ask to find out which energy source
is “best.” Write this down in your science section.

Sources of Energy
WRITE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IN YOUR NOTEBOOK

• Primary sources of energy (meaning energy is created directly

from the actual resource) can be roughly classified into two groups
1. Non-renewable
2. Renewable
• Secondary sources of energy are created from primary sources.

For the next few slides, you will need to go to this webpage

Non-Renewable Energy Sources

• Energy from the _______________ that has _____________ supplies,

either in the form of gas, liquid or solid, are called non-renewable
resources.
• They cannot be replenished, or made again, in a short period of
time.
• Examples include: oil (petroleum), natural gas, coal and uranium
(nuclear).
• Oil, natural gas and coal are called “_______________” because
they have been formed from the organic remains of prehistoric
plants and animals.
Renewable Energy Sources

• Energy that comes from a source that’s constantly

________________, such as the sun and _____________, can be
____________________ naturally in a short period of time.
• We do not have to worry about them running out.
• Examples include: solar, wind, biomass and hydropower.
• Currently, about 20% of the world’s electricity comes from
renewable resources. There is a global debate as to whether
geothermal energy is renewable or non-renewable.
Alternative Energy Sources

• Forms of energy not derived from fossil fuels include

both __________________ and __________________, terms that are
sometimes used interchangeably but do not mean the same
thing.
• Alternative energy broadly refers to any energy that is not
extracted from a fossil fuel, but not necessarily only from a
____________________.
• For example, ________________ power generation most
commonly uses uranium, an abundant but not technically
renewable fuel.
Secondary Energy Sources

• Energy that is converted from primary sources are

secondary sources of energy.
• Secondary sources of energy are used to ____________,
move and ______________ energy in an easily usable
form. Examples include electricity and hydrogen.
