What is Photosynthesis?
• The chemical process through which green
plants produce glucose and oxygen from
carbon dioxide and water by using light
energy.
• Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts of
green plants.
• Chloroplast has 3 membrane system-outer
membrane, inner membrane and thylakoid
system.
•Outer and inner membrane
encloses a semi-gel-like fluid
stroma

•Thylakoid system consist of

stacks of sacs called thylakoids
which floats in stroma

•Pigment chlorophyll is found in

thylakoids

•Thylakoids are arranged in

stacks called grana (plural);
singular- granum

•Stacks of sacs are connected by

lamellae

•Mesophyll cells in a leaf are the

principal centres of
photosynthesis.

Importance of Photosynthesis
• Provide food for all plants and animals
• Provide oxygen which are required by all living
organisms.
• Decrease the concentration of carbon dioxide
in atmosphere
