INTRODUCTION

 In the section on curved bridges, it was states that the trend to have optimum
transitions in design of roads and highways urges the employment of curved paths
and roads. On the other hand, the request for elimination of joints directs the
bridge designers to a solution called “Curved Integral Abutment Bridges”.
INTEGRAL ABUTMENT BRIDGE

 It is defined as “a Bridge with no expansion joints or sliding bearings and the

deck is continuous across the length of the bridge” Integral bridges are also
referred to as integral abutment bridges (IAB), joint less bridges, integral bent
bridges and rigid-frame bridges.
SEMI INTEGRAL ABUTMENT BRIDGE

 It is defined as only the expansion joints at Abutments are omitted, but the
bearings are provided.

ADVANTAGES

 The integral bridge gives improved design efficiency and improved riding
quality more than the conventional type of bridges.
 Integral bridges give us benefit like the elimination of water leakage on critical
structural elements.
 Integral bridges give us lesser tolerance restriction due to the elimination of
bearings and expansion joints.
 The construction speed is increased due to the simplifying process.
 Simplified widening and replacement detail useful for the strengthening of
existing bridges.
 When earthquake forces are predominant or when considerations like increased
resistance to blasts the integral bridge concept is an excellent option.
 The monolithic construction of abutment and the deck results in the low
maintenance of the bridge as there will be no corrosion due to seepage of water
through joints which in turn proves to be cost effective in terms of construction
and durability.

Author : Vedant Lalitkumar Patel

Review : For present study two lane bridge with span length of 25m and 35m
considered. Post tensioned I girder at 2.5 m centre to centre is
considered. For parametric study 2 span, 4 span, 6 span and 8 span
bridge for both type of bridge is considered. Analysis of this models
has been done using midas civil as a computational tool. Integral
bridges are economical as compare to bearing bridge and maintenance
is also very less. During earthquake event pier in integral bridge
experience half force compare to bearing bridge. After study of all
model comparative results has been provided in present study.

Author : Khairmode A. S. , Kulkarni D. B.

Review : In this paper, the analysis of horizontally curved prestressed concrete

box girder bridge deck is studied by using three dimensional modeling
and analysis. Section geometry, material properties and radius of
curvature are same in all the models while angle of curvature is varying
from 0° to 90°and angle of curvature are kept constant as 30°,60° and
90° analysis is carried out using the IRC class AA loading. The 3D
finite element models are prepared using SAP software. The results for
stresses are observed by keeping the same material properties.

Review : In this paper introduced A brief understanding of the concept of integral

abutment bridge and it’s working. We tried to give an idea about the
procedure of construction of the integral abutment bridge and explains
its structural benefits. There are several advantages of the integral
abutment bridge over the conventional bridge system they also
elaborate on this paper. The paper listed the different types of bridges
and different types of the integral abutment bridge. The paper presents
an elaborate comparison of the integral abutment system with the
conventional bridge system.

Review : A comparative study was done across north america, for design and
construction of both substructure and superstructure of integral bridge.
Integral bridge performance included minor cracking, drainage at
abutments, and settlement of approach slabs. The longest precast-
concrete-girder bridge of 358.4 m length built in tennessee. The longest
steel-girder and cast-in-place concrete bridges were both built in
colorado, measuring 318.4 m and 290.4 m respectively.

box girder bridges

Author : Alyaa shatti mohan alhamaidah

Review : In this study, A three dimensional straight and horizontally curved

prestressed box section has been analysed with shell elements using the
finite element analysis program ANSYS to examine structural
behaviour and load carrying capacity. The box girder under static
gravity, pre-stressed and gravity + pre-stressed loading has been
analysed. Further theoretical and analytical investigations have been
carried out to study the effects of parameters such as horizontal
curvature, prestressing, and traffic patterning.
NEED OF THE STUDY

 In India, limited data is available to study the comparison between integral and
bearing bridge systems, hence it restricts the probability of adopting a particular
system in certain condition.
 For a developing country like India the maintenance cost of structure should be
minimum. This forms the need to carry out the comparative study between
bearing and integral bridge systems.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

 To check effect of curvature on horizontally curved bridge with integral abutment

for various degrees of curvature such as 15°, 30° and 45° and The response of the
parameters such as shear force, bending moment, and torsion under the dead load
and live load is studied.
