What is Asynchronous Learning?
Asynchronous learning is a student-centered teaching method that uses
online resources to facilitate information sharing outside the constraints
of time and place among a network of people.
Asynchronous learning is based on constructivist theory.

History
• The roots of asynchronous
learning trace their
beginnings to the end of the
19th century.
• The first significant
distribution of standardized
educational content took
place during World War II
• Online asynchronous learning
began with schools’ and
universities’ substantial
investment in computer
technology in the early 1980s
(With seminal applications
such as Seymour Papert’s

Use of E-mail in
Asynchronous Learning
E-mail is a great way of staying in touch with
students (and their parents)
• Communication.
• Sending/submitting of homework and assignments.
• Sending additional materials.

Processing of Asynchronous Learning

7
Advantages of Asynchronous

Learning
Freedom as it provides access to the course and its
instructional materials at anytime, and any
location with an internet connection
• Provides a high degree of interactivity between
participants who are separated geographically.
• Offers many of the benefits of face-to-face
interaction.
• All materials can be electronically archived
• Allows students to work at their own pace.
• Allows students control of the pace of
instructional information
8
Disadvantages of Asynchronous
Learning
• There is no immediate access to an
instructor for questions or problems;
this is especially an issue with highly
technical or difficult content.
• Even though message boards and
chat rooms allow for interaction,
there is a lack of collaboration.
• Self-paced training requires a level of
self-motivation to complete.
• Student may feel isolated.

9
Best practices for developing
asynchronous training
• ADDIE:
A – Analyze
D – Design
D – Develop
I – Implement
E – Evaluate

• Incorporate fun activities

• Use discussion boards, if possible.
