INTRODUCTION
A space elevator will be a type of space transportation
system.
When designed it would permit vehicles to travel from
planetary surface into space without rockets.
It consists of a cable with one end on surface and other
beyond geostationary orbit.
HISTORY
 19th CENTURY  20th CENTURY
• The key concept of the space •  In 1929, Authur Clarke, the
elevator appeared in 1895 famous science fiction writer
when Russian scientist and futurist, in his novel
Konstantin Tsiolkovsky was Fountains of Paradise describes
inspired by the Eiffel Tower in the concept of the space
Paris. He considered a similar elevator.
tower that reached all the way
into space and was built from
the ground up to the altitude
of 35,790 kilometers.
MAIN COMPONENTS

Base Station(ANCHOR)
The  Cable (TETHER)
The Climbers
The Counterweight
THE ANCHOR
MOBILE BASE STATION
STATIONARY BASE STATION  More preferable than
stationary station.
 Less costly access to base.  Can avoid high storms, wind
 Can be built at high altitudes. and space debris.
THE TETHER
It must be strong enough to carry its own weight as well
as that of the climber.
Must be light and strong.
Recently discovered carbon nanotubes can be used as the
material for the cable.
THE CLIMBERS

Used as launch vehicles.

Payloads from 20,000-1,000,000 kg.
Velocity up to 200 km/hr.
THE COUNTERWEIGHT

Can be a heavy captured asteroid.

A space dock or space station.
A further upward extension of the cable itself.
HOW IT CAN BE DONE?

Tether anchored to the offshore sea platform.

Ribbon would stretch up to the counter weight
located at high altitude in space.
Climbers carrying cargo and humans into space.
WORKING PRINCIPLE

The centrifugal force of earth’s rotation is the basic

principle behind the working of elevator.
g= -G.M/r^2 + w^2.r
r1= (G.M/w^2)^(1/3)
r1=35,786 km
ADVANTAGES

Open up opportunities to research further into

space.
Inexpensive source of space travel.
Helpful for future space missions.
