Hydroelectric Power

Description Advantages Disadvantages

Topic ; Hydroelectric Power
Hydro power or hydroelectricity refers to the conversion of
energy from flowing water into electricity
Description of Hydroelectric Power
 Falling or flowing water turns a propeller like piece
called a turbine.

 The turbine turns a metal shaft in an electric

generator which produces electricity.

 Electric energy obtained from water

due to change in elevation
How it works

Location Hydro-electric power stations are generally located in

hilly areas where dams can be built conveniently and large water
reservoirs can be obtained.
Construction In a hydro-electric power station, water head is
created by constructing a dam across a river or lake. From the
dam, water is led to a water turbine.

Where is the best place for a HEP
station?
• The best place for a
hydro-electric power
station is up in the
mountains.
• This is because it
doesn’t get too hot so
the water doesn’t
evaporate and stays in
the dam.
• Also there is a lot of
rain in the mountains
ensuring the reservoir is
always full.
Sources of Electric Power

Is it renewable?

• Hydro-electric power is renewable.

• The Sun provides the water by evaporation from
the sea,and will keep on doing so
• The Sun evaporates
water from the sea and
lakes, which forms
clouds and falls as rain in
the mountains, keeping
the dam supplied with
water.

• Control Room
Advantages
 No fuel required

 renewable energy source

 No air pollution

 Can easily work during high peak daily loads

 Prevents floods
Disadvantages
 High initial cost

 Disruption of surrounding areas

 Requires large areas

 Large scale human displacement
