INTRODUCTION TO THE CASE
• Societal entrepreneur Kohl Gill founded Labor Voices in 2010 with the goal of utilizing mobile
phone communication to bring about transparency to Global Supply chain.
• Gill’s vision to develop a business that would permit workers in supplier factories in Bangalore,
India, and afterwards in other places -initially for leading brand businesses -to use their mobile
phones to report and share advice about factory conditions.
• This information could potentially be useful to a variety of groups the workers themselves,
nongovernmental organizations and unions that sought to enhance working conditions in the
global supply chain, factory supervisors who wanted to entice and retain high quality workers,
tracking and auditing
• Organizations that wished to improve their information sources, and International brand
businesses that sought to assure compliance by making use of their codes of behavior and to save
from reputational risk.
OVERVIEW OF LABOUR VOICES

• Labour Voices envisions a world without human trafficking, where all workers have access to
fair working conditions.
• Labour Voices is a scalable, worker-centered alternative to conventional factory inspections and
certifications, drawing information directly from workers’ mobile phones in real time.
• Labour Voices taps worker intelligence, helping brands detect emerging risks and choose the best
suppliers, helping factories attract and keep the best workers, and helping workers to help each
other make better decisions, avoiding abusive situations.
IMPACT

• To date, 350 workers have used the Labor Voices platform in India, Bangladesh, Argentina and four other countries. In
addition to these areas of current operation,
• LV has the capacity to support projects in more than 50 countries worldwide. LV is currently working with C&A
Foundation and USAID individually to implement its platform in Turkey and Bangladesh.
• With its unique combination of local outreach, regional languages and constant communication, LV finds itself with 14
times as much participation as other peer organizations conducting worker surveys.
• After using the LV platform, factories have taken measures to reduce harassment, while conditions and productivity have
improved.
• For example, LV’s case study in Bangladesh shows the incidence of verbal abuse dropped 33 percent, 93 percent of toilets
were cleaner and the overall factory rating increased by 53 percent. On average, factories that use the LV platform have
been able to improve working conditions by an average of 50 percent.
