The Prodigy of

Welding

By: Brandy Ratliff

Graduation Project 2010
Why did I choose Welding?

I chose welding because it appeared to be a

challenge, and a learning experience for me.
After taking one course of welding in school I
was very interested in learning more about
this process
For me Welding has become more than a
hobby; It’s a way to express myself, a talent,
and possibly even a career.
What is welding?

Welding - the process of joining

metal by heating, hammering, or
pressing the metal together
How did I find information on
Welding?

During my research process I used many sources such

as…
Informational websites
Helpful books
My Mentor
My mentor

Choosing a mentor for me was easy. I choose

Gary Treadway because he had a lot of
experience in the welding field. Gary has a
passion for teaching, and is really easy to get
along with. He taught me everything I know
about welding, and made it fun to learn.
Welding can be challenging …

During my research study I encountered several challenges that I had to

overcome
Welding can be dangerous if one is not taking proper steps to ensure ones
safety.
Proper eye protection is required due to the loose metal, extreme heat, and
intense light
Because of the extreme heat from the metal one must always wear safety
gloves; I personally dislike wearing gloves, and speaking from experience I
can assure anyone to wear some form of protection over their hands
Throughout my welding experiences I’ve had metal particles fly in my eyes
from not wearing safety glasses. I’ve had cuts, scratches, bruises, and even
burns all over my body from not taking the proper safety steps that are
required.
Achievements in Welding…

Standing here today I can proudly say that I’ve

had several accomplishments in welding
Since my study I got accepted to go to a
Regional competition for welding. In the
competition I was the only girl among 33 guys,
and I am proud to say I won 5th place
I have also taken certification test, and I am
officially a certified welder
My final product

As a final product I made a small handheld tool box. I

wanted to make something that showed my welding
ability. The toolbox I made is both beneficial, and easy
to maneuver. The welding process I used is “GMAW”
also known as wire welding in which I am certified in.
Gary Treadway taught me several helpful techniques
to construct my product.
