Performance Parameters of an Inverter

1. Harmonic factor of nth harmonic (HF) :

It is defined as the ratio of the rms voltage of a particular harmonic

component to the rms value of fundamental component.

2. Total Harmonic distortion (THD)

It is a measure of closeness in shape between a waveform and its

fundamental component (sinusoidal waveform). THD = 0 means sinusoidal
wave.

3. Distortion Factor (DF):

Indicates the amount of HD that remains in a particular

waveform after the harmonics have been subjected to second-
order attenuation.

4. Lowest order harmonic (LOH):

The harmonic component whose frequency is closest to the

fundamental and its amplitude is greater than or equal to 3% of
the amplitude of the fundamental component.

Multilevel Cascaded H Bridge Inverter

• The number of possible output voltage levels is more than twice the number of
dc sources (m=2s+1)
• The series of H-bridges makes for modularized layout and packaging.
• Separate dc sources are required for each of the H-bridges
