networking is the practice of linking two or more computing

devices together for the purpose of sharing data. Networks
are built with a mix of computer hardware and computer
software.

Networks can be categorized in several different ways. One

approach defines the type of network according to the
geographic area it spans. Local area networks (LANs), for
example, typically reach across a single home, whereas
wide area networks (WANs), reach across cities, states, or
even across the world. The Internet is the world's largest
public WAN.

A local area network (LAN) supplies networking capability to a group of

computers in close proximity to each other such as in an office building, a
school, or a home. A LAN is useful for sharing resources like files, printers,
games or other applications. There are two types of LAN connectivity: Wired
LAN and Wireless LAN.

Wired LAN Components

A network switch is a small hardware device that

joins multiple computers together within one
local area network (LAN)

A network adapter provides the interface between

a computer and a network connection. The term
network adapter was popularized originally by
Ethernet add-in cards for PCs.

Cable is the medium through which

information usually moves from one
network device to another. There are
several types of cable which are commonly
used with LANs.

What is Bandwidth?

The amount of information or data that can be sent over a

network connection in a given period of time. Bandwidth is
usually stated in bits per second (bps), kilobits per second
(kbps), or megabits per second (mbps).

Internet Connectivity Components

A broadband router combines the

features of a traditional network switch, a
firewall, and a DHCP server. Broadband
routers are designed for convenience in
setting up home networks, particularly for
homes with high-speed cable modem or
DSL Internet service. A broadband router
supports file sharing, Internet connection
sharing, and home LAN gaming.

Access points act as a central transmitter

and receiver of WLAN radio signals. In
essence, functions like a switch in a wired
LAN.

A wireless network adapter provides the

interface between a computer and a wireless
network connection.

Wireless LAN Standards

IEEE 802.xx is a set of specifications for LANs from The Institute of
Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). 802.11 defines the standard
for wireless LANs encompassing three incompatible (non-interoperable)
technologies: Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS), Direct
Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS), and Infrared.
