Introduction
• DHIS 2 is a software platform that the University of Oslo developed in 2006
to manage health information systems (HIS).
• The first implementation was in India in 2006 and the first national rollout
was in Kenya in 2010.
• Since then, low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) worldwide have
adopted the software.
• DHIS 2 is flexible, adaptable, and extendable through web application
program interfaces (APIs), which are useful for building software
applications (apps).
• It can be customized to suit many purposes for health information
management and for non-health sectors, too.
• It is a customizable free open source software (FOSS) which can be designed
and upgraded according to users' need on their own
Why DHIS-2
• Data quality - validation
• Interoperability – Open MRS
• Free and open software platform
• Strong analytical tool and visualization option
• Group communication/interaction
• Easy upgradability
• Fit for aggregated and client tracking both
Why DHIS-2 ……..
Data validation rules/mechanisms are built-in
ensuring data quality
Can be immediately rolled-out to health facility
level without major modifications
Legacy data can be imported to DHIS-2 and
multiple year analysis is possible
User experience sharing, messaging

DHIS2 in Nepal

• Health Management Information System (HMIS)

 Formally launched in 1st Mangsir 2073 by Hob’ble Health Minister
 Rolled out from 14th Mangsir 2073,
 Around 260 district level HR were trained
 Migrated Legacy data (Previous software) in to DHIS2 platform
since FY 2071/72 – 2073/74 (whatever entered)

• Early Warning and Reporting System (EWARS)

 Customized and Rolled out from Ashwin 2073
 Currently a central system and will go to sentinel site in next phase
DHIS 2 Building Blocks
• 3 core dimensions in DHIS 2 describing the data (3’W)
• The where, organization unit
• The when, period
• The what, data element
• All data values will at minimum have these 3 dimensions
Organization Data Period Value
Unit Element
Rimi Health Post, SM-PNC visits within Shrawan 2075 4
Dolpa 24 hours
Organization Unit
• Represents the geographical context
• Facility or ward providing services
• Administrative unit like district or Rural Municipality/Municipality
• Data is mostly collected and kept disaggregated at the lowest level (the
health facilities)
• Reports can be aggregated for any level
• Located inside a hierarchy (tree)
• Reflects administrative structure and levels
• Great impact on system usability and performance

Group Set and Group
• A flexible tool to add more categorization to Orgunits
• Group sets simplify how reporting is done, and facilitate analysis
through the use of tools such as Pivot table, visualizer
• Technique for creating alternative hierarchy
• Orgunits can be grouped into groups

Data Quality
• Not accept “o” where DE type is number
• Min-Max outlier
• Checks the values against a pre-defined max/min range for each data
element+orgunit combination
• Double-click on a value/field in data entry to see the historical values
and the range, also allows for individual ranges to be edited
• Data Validation
• A popup will notify the users if the value is outside the range
• Completeness and timeliness reports
Data Quality (Validation)
Output: 1-Report/Data Quality

• Standard Report –Nepal specific Report

• Organization Unit Report
• Data Set Report
• Reporting Rate Summary
• Min-Max outlier
• St. Dev outlier

particular subject or for other people.
The dashboard features integrated
messaging functionality which lets you
communicate directly with other users.
 Can view the data interpretation feed
- data interpretations shared from the
various analytics and start discussion
on that.
Output: 5-Dash Board

• Easily view the charts/tables/maps you use most

frequently
• Quickly monitor program progress
• Establish a routine for regularly checking key program
aspects
• Readily share information with others
Event Capture

event capture is
