During the last twenty (20) years, people
have changed the way they think about and
plan their careers.
 Decades ago, when someone chose a
career, he or she worked his way up the
ladder in one organization, or stay on that job
for the next 20 or 30 years. Today, things are
often different. Some people even change
employers every two years.
 Constant changes within the marketplace
and in people’s lives have affected how
individuals view their career paths.

Changes such as freelancing, work-at-home
concepts, frequent job changes have all

needs/objectives. The distinction between

go, means that you focus on your career needs.
 This is done by you, analyzing your individual goals
and skills. Such efforts may take into consideration

 Traditionally, career development efforts target
managerial personnel to look beyond their current
jobs and to prepare them for a variety of future jobs
in the organization.
 But career development for all employees, not just
managers is necessary for organizations to have the
needed human resources capabilities for growth and
change.

The changing workplace that has been
affected by mergers, restructurings and
layoffs has influenced the way people and
organizations look at careers and
development.
 You are encouraged to manage your own
career development. Such development will

and even changes in occupational fields.

An assessment or performance appraisal can


help you to understand the areas of
improvement needed.
 In addition to providing ongoing feedback
from your Supervisor or Department Head,
most companies will carry out a performance
assessment during the first three (3) to six
(6) months on the job.
 Thereafter, the evaluations will be done on a
yearly basis.

supervisor or department head is important.
 It will not only highlight the strong and weak
