Fundamentals of Synchro
phasor Technology
Synchronized Phasor
Measurement System
A SPMS consists of three main
parts:
◦ Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU)
◦ Phasor Data Concentrator (PDC)
◦ Communication system.
PRINCIPAL APPLICATIONS AND
BENEFITS OF SYNCHROPHASOR
TECHNOLOGY
 Situationalawareness and
wide-area monitoring
 Real-time operations
 Power system planning
 Forensic event analysis
WIDE AREA SYNCHROPHASOR MEASUREMENT (OR)
MONITORING SYSTEM
WAMS
 It’s a collective technology to monitor
power system dynamics in real time,
identify system stability related weakness
and helps to design and implement
counter measures.(IEEE)
 Wide Area Monitoring System uses a
global positioning system(GPS) satellite
signal to timesynchronize from phasor
measurement units (PMUs) at important
nodes in the power system, sends real-
time phasor (angle and magnitude) data
to a Control Centre.
WAMS
Goal & Benefits
 Real time monitoring
 Post-disturbance analysis
 Adaptive protection
 Power system restoration
Goal
◦ To provide operators with real time knowledge
of system conditions
Benefits of using PMU
◦ Improve calculation for real time path flow
and optimal dispatch  Provide actual limits of
the system instead of the conservative ones
from offline calculations
Goal
◦ To reconstruct the sequence of events after
disturbance has occurredes from offline
calculations
Benefits of using PMU
◦ Easier to understand sequence of events
when using synchronized data from PMU
Goal
◦ Adapt protection to be appropriate with
system condition
Benefits of using PMU
◦ Improved backup protection
◦ Adaptive protection setting to avoid
cascading outage
Goal
• Assist system operator during restoration with
data from PMU
Benefits of using PMU
• System operator have more confidence during
restoration
• Reduce chance of recurrence of system outage
• Reduce time needed for a system restoration

phasor Technology maturity
◦ Sharing users’ and vendors’ success stories and
high-value applications
◦ Accelerating development of technical
interoperability standards
◦ Focusing and facilitating baselining and pattern
recognition research (e.g., oscillation detection) and
other R&D
◦ Early identification of project implementation
challenges and community work to develop and
share solutions
