Level 5

Expanding Brackets 04/25/2020

Learning Objectives:

• Able to substitute into an expression or

equation
• Able to expand a single bracket
• Able to expand two single brackets
and collect the like terms
• Able to expand two (or more!) brackets
Noughts and crosses – substitution
Expanding Brackets
• ‘Expanding brackets’ means to ‘multiply out’,
or remove the brackets

• To expand brackets, multiply everything inside

the brackets by what is outside them

4(a + 6) 4(3b + 5c)

Expanding Brackets
• 5(3a + 7) + 9(8a – 3)
15a + 35 + 72a – 21

87a + 14
• 12c(3c3 + 3c) – 5c2(c2 – 6)
36c4 + 36c2 - 5c4 + 30c2

31c4 + 66c2
Starter
• Expand: 7(3a – 8)

• Expand and simplify: 5(b + 8) – 3(3b + a)

• Expand: 4c(3c + 8d)

Level 6
Expanding Brackets 04/25/2020

Learning Objectives:

• Able to expand a single bracket

• Able to expand two single brackets
and collect the like terms
• Able to expand two (or more!) brackets
Expanding Brackets
• Simplify: b3 x b5
b x b x b x b x b x b x b x b = b8

• Simplify 2a2 x 3a3

2 x a x a x 3 x a x a x a = 6a5

• When we multiply the same letter together,

we add the indices together
Expanding Brackets
• Expand: y4(y3 – y) 6n3(3n7 + 2m2n5)
Expanding Brackets
• Can you expand these brackets?
7(m – 5) 6(4r + 5t3) 4g2(3g2 – 8h3)
Expanding Brackets
• 12c(3c3 + 3c) – 5c2(c2 – 6)
36c4 + 36c2 - 5c4 + 30c2

31c4 + 66c2
Starter
• Expand and simplify (where possible) the
following:

• 3a(a – 8)

• 12b(b + 7) – 3b2(4b – 3)

• 9c2d3(3c3d4 + 8c5d6)
Expanding Brackets
• To expand two brackets, we multiply
everything in one bracket by everything in the
other
x n +7
(n + 4)(n + 7) n n2 +7n
+4 +4n +28

= n2 + 7n + 4n + 28 = n2 + 7n + 4n + 28
= n2 + 11n + 28 = n2 + 11n + 28
Expanding Brackets
• (3m + 7)(2m – 5)
x 3m +7
(3m + 7)(2m – 5) 2m 6m2 +14m
-5 -15m -35

= 6m2 -15m +14m -35 = 6m2 -15m +14m -35

= 6m2 – m – 35 = 6m2 – m – 35
Expanding Brackets
• Expand the following:

1) (a + 8)(a + 7) = a2 + 15a + 56
= b2 + 16b + 48
2) (b + 12)(b + 4)
= c2 + 4c – 21
3) (c + 7)(c – 3)
= 2d2 + 3d – 5
4) (2d + 5)(d – 1) = 12e2 - 49e + 49
5) (3e – 7)(4e – 7) = f2 + 16f + 64
6) (f + 8)2 = 9g2 – 66g + 121
7) (3g – 11)2
