INTRODUCTION TO NAM

WHAT IS NON-ALIGNMENT ?
A certain code of conduct though not recognised by law but
governed by the general principles of inter-state behaviour
developed over the years.

ORIGIN:
1. Emergence of two power blocs i.e. USA
and USSR
2. Decision of newly independent nations
to remain non-aligned
PRINCIPLES:
– Commitment to peace and disarmament
– Right to self-determination
– To condemn all manifestations of unilateralism
– Promotion and use of peaceful means for settlement of disputes
– Peaceful co-existence
– Respect for human rights of all the citizens
– Compliance with principles of UN
NAM AND UNITED NATIONS

Opening paragraph of the Kuala Lumpur Summit states: “Member countries


shall address the issues of global importance and ensure that all matters
would be dealt in accordance with the principles of UN.”

India believes that “NAM has a major role to play in the UN reforms and in
ensuring that the reform of the UN is both balanced and equitable”

NAM has always urged its member-states to fulfil their obligations in


combating terrorism, compliance with International Humanitarian Law
which are consistent with the UN Charter.

Raised the concern with respect to interference by Security Council in the


working of General Assembly.

“If the coalitions of interests on reform of Security Council are considered, no


meaningful reform would have been considered without the consensus of the Big
Five and NAM.”

Initiated in making the membership of the Council more representative and


reforming the veto right.

NAM aimed to increase transparency by increasing the membership from 15 in


the decision-making process.
