Simple Present Tense is the
tense used to express an
action or activity that takes
place / happening at the
current time in a simple form /
activity or work performed
repeatedly / daily habits,
events or actions that have

NOTES ON SINGULAR SUBJECT (3RD
PERSON)
In the 3rd person singular, the verb always
end with –s
ex: He wants, She needs, It sends.

Verbs ending in –y:

the 3rd person changes the –y to –ies
ex: fly  flies, cry  cries
Exception if there is a vowel (a,e,i,o,u)
before the –y:
ex: play  plays, pray  prays

 Add –es to verbs ending in: -ss, -x, -sh, -ch:

TYPICAL ERROR IN THE USE OF
SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE
We always use the -s form
for third person singular
present simple.

× I wakes up at 6:30am
every
morning.
 We don’t use the present
simple for actions that are
going on at the present
time. We use the present
continuous.

× She watches korean

drama now.
/ She is watching korean
We don’t use the present
continuous
for facts and permanent
situations.
We use the present
simple.

× The sun is setting in

the west.
We don’t use the present
simple
before since when we talk
about a
specific time up to now. We
use the
present perfect.

× I’m here since 5 o’clock.
