DEVELOPMENTAL PROJECT:

By: Haley Klunk

MORAL/PHYSICAL
DEVELOPMENT
This book is about a boy named
Auggie who has a facial deformity that
has made it hard for him to make
friends. His parents really want to
enroll him into a private school since
he has been home schooled for so
long. He begins going to school for
some time and eventually some
students begin to make friends with
Auggie, but some don’t and begin
starting rumors about him. Some
students begin to alienate Auggie
after this. This story goes into some of
the different views of the other
students as well that met Auggie
through school and summer camp.
WHY I CHOOSE THIS BOOK:
 Incorporates Kohlberg’s stages in Level 2: Individuals
make moral decisions based on what actions will please
others, concerned about maintaining interpersonal
relationships through sharing, trust, and loyalty
 This book also shows all the moral dilemmas students go
through when making friends and trying to keep them.
Especially in middle school you don’t want to upset a
friend by trying to stand up for someone that they may
not like.
 Wonder can also show students that everyone is different
and that morally you shouldn’t treat them differently just
because they are different
WHY I CHOSE IT FOR PHYSICAL:
 Brings into the aspects about what its like growing up
and having people say things about your appearance
 Talks about the different height differences of the
students in the school
 Takes place at an elementary school, but the camp
shows students who are older as well to compare them
to the different age groups
SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL
DEVELOPMENT
Stargirl is about a girl who is new at
Mica High, who stands out the very
first day she walks through the door.
She ignites school spirit making her
popular and captures the heart of a
boy named Leo. Then everything
changes and the school turns on
Stargirl for being different. Leo tries
to get her to become normal just like
everyone else, but even the thought
of that would destroy her.
WHY I CHOSE THIS BOOK:
 The central task of a young adolescent is to ask the
question, “Who am I?”
 Erikson’s theory comes into play in the book with Identity
versus role confusion because Stargirl knows who she is
and won’t allow others to change that about her
 Marcia’s theory that there is a great variability in
personality, background, social development, and
intellectual development.
 In the book Stargirl doesn’t mind being different which is
sometimes hard for a middle level student because they
care so much about the opinions of others so this book
could help show not to do this so much
COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT
This book is about a group of five
middle school kids who aren’t
that popular so they call
themselves the Misfits. There is a
school election for class president
and vice president. The election
has brought out many different
problems for Bobby and Addie.
The group has to work together
to get the popular boy in school
to help get them noticed.
WHY I CHOSE THIS BOOK:
 An ideal book for middle school students because it is
something that some schools may participate in so they
would be able to understand the book better
 Focusing more on Paget’s theory of concrete and formal
operations as a whole class they could read this book and
possibly for the concrete learners, make their own
election day.
 Concrete learners are better at visual problems than at
verbal problems so by doing this they could work at this
after reading the book and seeing what problems these
characters go through
