SUMMARY
What is a
GOOD summary?
• Only essential information is conveyed in fewer
words / sentences
• It is concise and includes only key ideas
• It omits minor details, illustrations, examples,
descriptions and detailed explanations
• It does not include our own views, opinions, ideas
or interpretations
• It uses transitional words or cohesive devices (e.g.
moreover, in addition to, then, also)
• It restates the main ideas of the text in other words
Steps in writing a GOOD summary
1. Preview the text to get a general idea of what it
is about.
2. Read the text carefully then underline or
highlight the main ideas and important details.
3. Write your first draft of the summary using the
main ideas you have underlined / highlighted.
4. Remember to use transition words to connect
the main ideas in a coherent way.
