Motivation:
SETTING THE MOOD
 The students will guess what the pictures or illustrations are all about and they will try
to fulfill the missing letters to complete a word/s.

Topic: Using Various Techniques in Summarizing and Paraphrasing of Academic Texts

What is SUMMARIZING? Using your own words to tell the key ideas from the text

 a brief statement of a text’s main points.


 is selecting out key features of a text to create a shorter version
 refers to providing an abridged version of the narrative
 a synthesis of the key ideas of a piece of writing, restated in your own words
 a shortened version of a text that highlights its key points
 an important skill in critical reading
 summarizing is often used to determine the essential ideas in a book, book chapter, article
or parts of an article. These essential ideas include the gist or main idea, useful information,
or key words or phrases that help you meet your reading purpose.
 Is generally done after reading. However, it can be done as well while reading a text.
 Defined as a strategy used to identify the thesis statement / main idea and to write a
summarized from of subordinating points
 Uses a precise and specific language
What is SUMMARY?

 a synopsis or digest of the essence of an entire text


 an academic paper that contains a thesis statement/main idea and summarized
subordinating points of a text
 presents the most essential pieces of information in paragraphs following the I-B-C format
(Introduction, Body and Conclusion) for academic papers like research abstract, precis,
report, synopsis and others
 outlines the most essential pieces of information for academic paper like resume.
 In short, summary is a concise statement or account of the main points of a text.

TWO AIMS OF SUMMARIZING

To reproduce the main idea and key points of a text.


To restate these in as few words as possible.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MAIN IDEA AND KEY POINTS

MAIN IDEA

 is the topic of the text

KEY POINTS

 are arguments used to explain the main ideas


 information or arguments used by the author to explain the topic

HOW LONG SHOULD BE A SUMMARY?

 Summaries can be made in one sentence or longer depending on the original text you’re
working on
 It can be summarized in one or two sentences

NOTE:

“You cannot quote extensively”


 It means you cannot use the exact words from the original text, especially if you didn’t
mention the author in your summary, because it may lead to plagiarism.

BENEFITS OF SUMMARIZING

1. It helps you learn to identify key ideas of a text and ignore irrelevant information.

2. It improves our memory and by extension, our comprehension.

3. it is an effective tool to self-evaluate what is understand about the original text/what has been
understand about the original text.

SUMMARIZING TIPS:

1. Read the text very carefully.

2. Ask yourself these questions:

a. What is the Main Idea?


b. What are the crucial details necessary for supporting the ideas?

3. Highlight, underline or jot down what you think is the main points of the text.

4. When summarizing an entire essay, outline the writer’s argument.

5. Summarize in chronological order.

WHY IS SUMMARIZING DONE?

 Deepen your understanding of the text


 Learn to identify irrelevant information or key ideas
 Combine details or examples that support the main idea/s
 Concentrate on the gist or main idea and key words presented in the text
 Capture the key ideas in the text and put them together clearly and concisely

HOW IS SUMMARIZING DONE?

1. Read and re-read the text.

2. Select the key ideas from the text and the phrases that can be associated to these ideas.

3. Connect the key ideas to the phrases using a concept map.

4. Write your own version of those key ideas and phrases in your own words. Refrain from adding
comments about the text.

5. Compare your summary to the original text. The summary MUST BE SHORTER than the original
text.

6. Cite your source/s.

SUMMARIZE when…

 You want to identify only the main ideas of the writer.


 You want to give an overview of the topic (for several sources).
 You want to simplify a complex argument.
 You want to condense the matter to suit your requirement.

It is NOT SUMMARIZING when you…

o Write down everything


o Write down ideas from the text word-for-word
o Write down incoherent and irrelevant ideas
o Write down ideas that are not stated in the text
o Write down or summary that has the same length or is longer than the original text

Examples:
PARAPHRASE when…

 You want to use another writer’s words without plagiarizing.


 You want to use another writer’s words without the use of quotes.
 The ideas of the other writer are more important.
 You think that the words of the other writer are too difficult for your reader.
