a. ACTIVITY Concept Note No. 1

Topic: Critical Reading

Why is it important to be a critical reader? Does it mean that when you read a lot of books or any
reading materials that you can be called a critical reader?
Have you received this kind of e-mail or text? What was your initial reaction? Did you believe
it right away or too good to be true?

 The way you react to this kind of information is a test how good you are in evaluating
whether it is true or not.

 Do you agree or disagree with the author when you read?

 Are you an active reader?

As a reader you are not a passive participant but an active constructor of meaning.
You might say; “I’m a book worm, I read a lot.”

Possible meaning of the word “critical”

 Someone or something is “to disapprove it” or to have a negative response to that

person or thing.

Example: Some people are critical of the government’s distribution of vaccine.

 To be critical it can mean very important

Example: The information drive about the different kinds of vaccine is critical to the people.

 Critical may also mean very serious

Example: You say, the flooding situation in some areas of Cebu has reached a critical point.

 Or if a patient in a hospital is in critical then things are not looking good for that person

Example: My friend is in critical condition right now.

These are all useful meanings of the word “critical” but what do you do when you do a
movie critique after watching the movie? You comment on the acting, the plot, soundtrack and
others. Your report might be negative or positive. You are expressing a judgement about the
quality of the movie objectively. When you read too good to be true information, you need to
analyze, interpret and evaluate that is CRITICAL READING.

When we read critically, we use our critical thinking skills to question both the text our own
reading of it.

Do you KNOW what Critical Reading is?

a more active way of reading it

It is deeper and more complex when engaging with a text.

It’s also a process of analyzing, interpreting and sometimes evaluating.

When we read critically, we use our critical thinking skills to question both the text
and our own reading of it.

Different disciplines may have distinctive modes of critical reading (scientific,

philosophical, literary, etc.)
IMPORTANCE of Critical Reading

We need to do critical reading because it is important since critical reading

requires you to evaluate the arguments in the text.

You need to differentiate the facts from opinion, and look at arguments
given for and against the claims.

PURPOSE of Critical Reading

Basically, its purpose is to assess the strength of the evidence and the
arguments.

It is useful to cease a study, or an article with a very strong evidence and a

reasoned argument.

HOW TO DO Critical Reading?

STEP 1: Analyze the task, break down the assignment into component
parts.

STEP 2: Begin research, find articles and other relevant resources.

STEP 3: Pre-reading activities

you should be confident that you have understood the text

What the text describes:  sufficiently to be able to use your own examples and compare
and contrast with other writing on the subject in hand.

this means that you should be able to fully analyze the text and
Interpretation of the text:  state a meaning for the text as a whole.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SIMPLE READING AND
CRITICAL READING

Simple Critical
Reading Reading

NOTE!

Critical reading is not necessarily mean being critical when you read, it simply means
engaging in what you read by asking yourself questions, such as:

 What is the author trying to say?

 What is the main argument being presented?

To read critically is to exercise your judgement about what you are reading. That is not
taking anything you read at face value. We need to be critical in reading or simply do critical
reading for the purpose of assessing the strength of arguments and evidence in order to
differentiate factual from opinionated statements. In this way, we’ll be able to fully
understand what we are reading and be able to gather the information we need.

b. ANALYSIS

If We Hold on Together
By: Diana Ross

Don't lose your way

With each passing day
You've come so far
Don't throw it away
Live believing
Dreams are for weaving
Wonders are waiting to start
Live your story
Faith, hope and glory
Hold to the truth in your heart

If we hold on together
I know our dreams will never die
Dreams see us through to forever
Where clouds roll by
For you and I

Souls in the wind

Must learn how to mend
Seek out a star
Hold on to the end
Valley, mountain
There is a fountain
Washes our tears all away
Words are swaying
Someone is praying
Please let us come home to stay

If we hold on together
I know our dreams will never die
Dreams see us through to forever
Where clouds roll by
For you and I

When we are out there in the dark

We'll dream about the sun
In the dark, we'll feel the light
Warm our hearts, everyone

If we hold on together
I know our dreams will never die
Dreams see us through to forever
As high as souls can fly
The clouds roll by
For you and I
