Def of powder metallurgy process
• It is the art and science of producing fine metal
powder.
• In this process the powders are compressed
into desired shape and then heated to cause
bonding of the particles into a hard rigid mass.
• The products that can be made by powder
metallurgy are self lubricating bearings,
cemented carbides for cutting tools, sprockets,
electrical contact points, gears etc
Characteristics of metal powder
• The performance of metal powders during
processing and the properties of metal powders are
dependent upon the characteristics of metal
powders. These are:
1. Particle shape
2. Particle size
3. Flow rate
4. Compressibility
5. Density
6. purity
Characteristics
1. Particle shape: the shape may be nodular, irregular,
angular and dendritic. The shape largely depend on
the method of powder manufacture used. The
particle shape affect the packing of a powder and
has an influence on its compacting and sintering
properties.
2. `Particle size: the particle size has great importance
because it affects density of compact, porosity,
dimensional stability flow and mixing
characteristics.
Characteristics…………..
3. Flow rate: It is the ability of a powder to flow
readily and conform to the mould cavity.
4. Compressibility : it is defined volume of initial
powder (powder loosely filled in cavity) to the
volume of compact part. It depends on particle
size and particle distribution and shape.
5. Apparent density: it is the ratio of volume to
weight of compact part. It is largely influenced
by the particle size of the powder.
Characteristics…………..
6. Purity: Metal powders should be free from
impurities as the impurities reduces the life of
dies and affect sintering process
