 Attribution (BY)

 Attribution, in copyright law, is acknowledgement as credit to the

copyright holder or author of a work. If a work is under copyright, there is
a long tradition of the author requiring attribution while directly quoting
portions of work created by that author.
 An author may formally require attribution required via a license, legally
preventing others from claiming to have written the work and allowing a
copyright holder to retain reputational benefits from having written it. In
cases when the copyright holder is the author themselves, this behavior is
often moralized as a sign of decency and respect to acknowledge the
creator by giving them credit for the work.
 This said, a work in the public domain, which is any not covered by
copyright, has no such attribution requirement in most parts of the world.
This is the distinguishing factor between plagiarism, which is not a crime,
and copyright infringement, which may be a cause of legal action from the

element (NC)
 “Non Commercial means not primarily intended for or directed towards
commercial advantage or monetary compensation.
 ”The definition is intent-based and intentionally flexible in recognition of the
many possible factual situations and business models that may exist now or
develop later.
 Clear-cut rules exist even though there may be gray areas, and debates have
ensued over its interpretation. In practice, the number of actual conflicts
between licensors and licensees over its meaning appear to be few.
 This page sets forth fundamentals of how the definition of NonCommercial
operates and should be interpreted from CC’s perspective as the steward of
the CC license suite. We provide some key points to consider before choosing
an NC license for your own work or before using an NC-licensed work.
 No Derivative Works (ND)

 The no derivatives creative commons license is

straightforward; you can take a work released under
this license and re-distribute it but you can’t change
it. You must give credit to the original author of the
work, state their name and the title of the original
work, and include the attribution logo, found on their
website here.
 Doesn’t allow for Tivoization and provides protection
from defamation for the creator.
 Licensees may copy, distribute, display and perform
only verbatim copies of the work, not derivative works
 and remixes based on it.
 Share-alike
(SA)
 Share-alike is a copyright licensing term, originally used
by the Creative Commons project, to describe works or
licences that require copies or adaptations of the work
to be released under the same or similar licence as the
original.[1]
 Copyleft licences are free content or free software
licences with a share-alike condition.
 Two currently-supported Creative Commons licences
have the Share Alike condition:
 Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (a copyleft, free
content licence) and Creative Commons Attribution-
NonCommercial-ShareAlike (a proprietary licence).
 The term has also been used outside copyright law to refer to a
similar plan for patent licensing.[2]
