APPLICATIONS CONCLUSION
INTRODUCTION
• Method of transferring power from an
1 engine
• Provides outstanding efficiency and
smooth, powerful driving
2 performance.
• Constant transfer of power to the
3 driven object
EVOLVEMENT OF CVT
• Sketched by Leonardo da Vinci in 1490
• Old idea that has only recently become a
bastion of hope to automakers
• Advancements in fuel economy and emissions
triggered the R&D of CVT.
• If consumers are buying millions of cars with
conventional transmissions, why spend billions
to develop and manufacture CVTs?
TYPES

CVT

Push belt Variable Variable

Toroidal CVT
type diameter CVT geometry CVT
TOROIDAL
• Developed by Nissan
• Applicable for engines capacity more than 3.0litres
• Transmissions use high shear strength of viscous
fluids to transmit torque between i/p torus & o/p
torus.
• By changing the tilt of the power rollers continuously,
the EXTROID CVT executes smooth, continuous gear
ratio changes.
• Power rollers controlled by hydraulic pressure.
BELT DRIVE/PUSH BELT CVT
• Uses segmented steel blocks stacked on a steel
ribbon.
• Transmits power by means of two pulleys and a
steel belt
• 1 pulley receives torque generated from engine
and other pulley transmits drive torques to tires.
• Gear ratio is varied by varying the width of pulleys.
• Limited to small engines of capacity < 2litres..
• Electronically controlled by sensors.
VARIABLE DIAMETER CVT
• Uses a flat, flexible belt mounted on movable
supports.
• Supports can change radius and thus gear
ratio
Cone CVT
• Works with belt sliding over two elongated
cones setup parallel.
• Aligned such that largest dia. Of one cone
aligned against smallest dia of other cone

Driver
BENEFITS
Improves fuel economy by
enabling engine to operate
under conditions of max.
efficiency

Exceptionally smooth power

delivery free from any shift shock

Provides powerful driving by

continually eliciting high engine
power

CVT engines accelerates faster

LIMITATIONS
Slow progress due to lack of demand
conventional manual and automatic transmissions have long offered sufficient performance and fuel economy

Slippage in drive belt or rollers

Caused by the lack of discrete gear teeth

High cost
Low volume and a lack of infrastructure

Complex algorithms to accommodate an infinite division of speeds and gear ratios.

R&D
General motors implemented metal-belt CVTs in some
vehicles

Nissan has taken a dramatic step with its “Extroid” CVT,

Multitronic CVT by Audi having better mileage and

acceleration

Honda, and Subaru use belt-drive CVTs developed with Dutch

company Van Doorne Transmissie (VDT)
OTHER APPLICATIONS
• flexible system to convey power from their engine to
TRACTORS their wheels

• Large range of speeds, longer driving range between

Golf Carts charges, Fewer batteries, lower maintenance cost, less
weight.

Power tools • smoother operation and more reliability.

MINIMACHINES AND
INDUSTRIAL operate in a wide range of speeds, as the need arises
