Past Perfect Continuous

Unit 5C – A Good Read

Past Perfect Continuous (I had been doing)

 The past perfect continuous describes actions or

events that were in progress before or up to (or
nearly up to) a certain point in the past. The time
of this another event (that perhaps interrupted or
affected the earlier event) is in the past simple.
 They had been working on the project for ten

months when it was cancelled.

 We had been playing for half an hour when there

was a terrible storm.

Past Perfect Continuous (I had been doing)

 The past perfect continuous is often used to

state the length of time that something
happened up until a past time:
 We had been playing guitar all evening and

were tired.
 He had been smoking for 30 years when he

finally gave it up.

* It can’t be used with stative verbs!
* It can’t be used to describe completed
actions.
